Lake Superior Writers' Editing Program

A Unique Opportunity for Writers
** This opportunity is open only to current members of Lake Superior Writers.
A. Check the LSW Web Site for a list of editors, (see below)
or request a list from the Lake Superior Writers’ office (218-722-3094).
B. Contact the editor of your choice for an initial meeting.
C. Prepare, and bring to that initial meeting:
1. A completed manuscript ready for editing.
2. A clear statement about the kind of editorial help you desire.
Your editor will do an initial Read and Response of the entire manuscript. At
that point, the editor will make recommendations about the extent and type of
editing needed.
Together you and the editor will agree on goals, as well as the time, place,
and frequency of meetings.
You will pay the editor directly $25/hour for time spent with you and with your
writing.
Either of you may terminate this agreement at any time.

An Opportunity for Experienced Writers
Lake Superior Writers offers you a unique opportunity to earn money while helping
other writers in your area(s) of expertise.
If you are an experienced writer and you are interested in becoming
a LSW Editor, here’s what you do:
Submit a letter of intent, with a brief resume including publications and
teaching/ interpersonal experience, along with a one time $10 fee.
Here’s what we do:
Post your name and information on our LSW Web Site, and on a list to be distributed
to interested students.
Here’s how it works:
Students select and contact the editor of their choice.
Editor and student set up an initial meeting to discuss goals, and procedural
questions such as time, place, and frequency of meetings.
At this meeting, the student will bring a bring to that initial meeting: a
completed manuscript ready for editing and a clear statement about the kind
of editorial help he or she desires.

Cal Benson
Fiction, Poetry, Memoir
General Editing/Shaping
An experienced and committed teacher, on his retirement Cal was honored with
the Outstanding Editor Award from Phi Delta Kappa. In 2006, Cal published Peterpie
Moon, a poetic memoir for his son, who had died the previous year.

Jeannie Eddy
Non-Fiction, Fiction, Mystery

Jeanie is an editor for the online flash fiction publication, Flash Me Magazine.
She has had several short stories and poems published in various print and
online publications, including Enigma, Long Story Short, The Dazzling Desert
and Apollo’s Lyre. She belongs to several writers and online critique
groups and has participated in many writers’ workshops and retreats.

Mara Hart

Mara has published memoirs in Dust & Fire, Lifeboat, Lovecraft Studies,
Minnesota Literature, and Sing! Heavenly Muse, among other places, and has
recently edited Lovecraft’s New York Circle: the Kalem Club, 1924-1927.
She holds an M.F.A. in Memoir Writing. Mara has received both an Arrowhead
Regional Arts Fellowship and a Travel Grant, and a Jerome Foundation Travel
Grant. She is an experienced teacher.

Kathleen Hills

Kathleen has published three mystery novels Past Imperfect, Hunter’s
Dance, and Witch Cradle, and is working on a fourth. She has also published
several short stories. Her books have been favorably reviewed in The New York
Times, Chicago Tribune, and Boston Globe, among many other places. She has
taught communication skills in the public schools and has done much editing
and critique work, including editing book length fiction. She has also edited
non-fiction, including scientific papers for non-native speakers. References

Bonita Martin

Bonita currently provides contract analytical and writing support service
through Superior Testing Laboratory. She has worked as a professional researcher,
editor, and proofreader. She was lead editor, writer, and copy editor for
Promethean, She is a member of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets. She prefers
to work with electronic manuscripts.

Lindsy O'Brien

Lindsy owns and serves as editor-in-chief at her own Duluth-based publishing company, Red Step Press, which specializes in local non-fiction. Her press' first release, Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range by Aaron Brown, won the 2009 Northeastern Minnesota Book Award for creative non-fiction/memoir, and her own fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction have been published in several local and national publications. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior in English and Speech Communications.

Justin Zachary Powers

Justin has moderated workshops, writing seminars, and monthly critique groups.
He has studied writing at UMD for seven years. His resume includes articles
for various magazines and newspapers. Justin says: “From me writers
will get unique perspectives, thoughtful challenges, and the inspiration to
find their voice with great clarity and leave a lasting impression on their
reader and work.”

Cheryl Reitan

Cheryl is a writer and the editor of many university publications at UMD.
Her fiction has been included in numerous literary journals, including Dust
& Fire and The Roaring Muse. She has received residency awards at Hambidge
Center for the Arts, Nantucket Island Center for the Arts, Norcroft, and others.
She has also participated in a variety of writing workshops and readings.

Ellen Sandbeck

Ellen has had three nonfiction books published, two by Random House (Broadway/Doubleday)
and one by Scribner. She has edited novels for local authors. She is interested
in copy editing, and says “I am extremely picky.” She is open
to editing most genres except pornography and poetry.

Gail Trowbridge

Gail has worked as a writer and editor for fifteen years, and has published
stories in Sing! Heavenly Muse, Mpls/ St. Paul Magazine, and the WARM Journal,
and has sold non-fiction articles to Lake Superior Magazine, The Duluthian,
Your Life, The Duluth News Tribune and BusinessNorth. She has edited three
books, including The Will and the Way, a 2004 Duluth history now in its second
printing. Gail holds a B.A. in Journalism.

Marie Zhuikov
Non-Fiction (especially environmental and health related writing), Fiction,

Marie is currently employed as communications coordinator for UMD’s Minnesota
Sea Grant Program. She has edited several award-winning nonfiction books and
produced dozens of fact sheets, booklets, and brochures. Marie has a BA in science
journalism and a Masters in health journalism. She has been writing and editing
for twenty-five years. She is a member of the speculative fiction writers’
group through LSW and is a published poet. Her stories have appeared in Boundary
Waters Journal, Lake Superior Magazine, as well as many regional newspapers,
including the Duluth News Tribune. She also has experience producing videos,
CDs, and web sites.
