LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS CONTEST

HARD TIMES: AN OPEN GENRE WRITING CONTEST

Deadline: March 1, 2010

Submissions may be complete works or excerpts in any of the following genres: poetry, non-fiction, fiction, essay, memoir, novel, short story, or play or movie script. Submissions must be original, unpublished and unproduced. Staged readings or workshop productions will not disqualify a play or movie script. Submission length must be no longer than 3,000 words or, in the case of poetry, 3 poems totaling no more than 6 pages. The subject matter of each submission must relate to the theme “Hard Times.” Manuscripts must be typed. There must be two title pages, one that includes the name of the submitted piece or pieces, author’s name, address, email address and phone number and a second that includes ONLY the name of the submitted piece or pieces. Persons may submit only once. Submissions will not be returned. All submissions will be blind reviewed by a panel of judges.

Submissions are due by Monday, March 1, 2010 (postmarked) to Lake Superior Writers, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132, Duluth, MN 55811.

A first place award of $150, second place award of $100, and a third place award of $50 will be given. Three runners up will also be chosen. Award winners will be asked to read on Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 pm at the Harbor City School auditorium in Duluth. The entries of the award winners and runners up will be published on the LSW website. Only members of Lake Superior Writers may submit their work; non-members may join Lake Superior Writers and submit their work at the same time by including a check made out to Lake Superior Writers for $35. Members of the LSW board are not eligible to enter the contest.

Past Contest Results

On Sunday, May 24, 2009, at the Playground, Lake Superior Writers presented ONE-ACT WINNERS, two winning plays from our One-Act Play Competition, performed as readers' theatre:

First Place: "The Voice of the Turtle" by Teresa Boyle Falsani.
Second Place: "This Too Shall Pass" by Matt Wall.
