Hats and horns! Happy New Year to you and yours! Albeit a
week late, here’s your brand spanking new LSW E-Calendar
to begin a brand spanking new decade!
LSW
ACTIVITIES AND NEWS.
Submissions may be complete works or excerpts in any of the
following genres: poetry, non-fiction, fiction, essay,
memoir, novel, short story, or play or movie script.
Submissions must be original, unpublished and unproduced.
Staged readings or workshop productions will not disqualify
a play or movie script. Submission length must be no longer
than 3,000 words or, in the case of poetry, 3 poems totaling
no more than 6 pages. The subject matter of each submission
must relate to the theme “Hard Times.” Manuscripts must
be typed. There must be two title pages, one that includes
the name of the submitted piece or pieces, author’s name,
address, email address and phone number and a second that
includes ONLY the name of the submitted piece or pieces.
Persons may submit only once. Submissions will not be
returned. All submissions will be blind reviewed by a panel
of judges. Submissions are due by Monday, March 1, 2010
(postmarked) to Lake Superior Writers, 1301 Rice Lake Road,
Suite 132, Duluth, MN 55811. A first place award of $150,
second place award of $100, and a third place award of $50
will be given. Three runners up will also be chosen. Award
winners will be asked to read on Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 pm
at the Harbor City School auditorium in Duluth. The entries
of the award winners and runners up will be published on the
LSW website. Only members of Lake Superior Writers may
submit their work; non-members may join Lake Superior
Writers and submit their work at the same time by including
a check made out to Lake Superior Writers for $35. Members
of the LSW board are not eligible to enter the contest.
** ADVANCE NOTICE: Lake Superior Writers Valentine
Fundraiser LSW is hosting a delightful event on Sunday, Feb
14 at 5 p.m. at the Unitarian building. A gourmet dinner,
enjoyable entertainment, and an auction are on the program.
Watch for an invitation coming your way soon. RSVPs and
$50 per person are due Feb. 9. Volunteers are needed to help
organize the auction and the event. Join the committee for
the next meeting at noon on Thurs., Jan 7, at Sara's Table
or at 6 pm on Mon, Jan 11 for a potluck supper and meeting.

** LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS ANNOUNCES SEARCH FOR 2010/2012
DULUTH POET LAUREATE
Lake Superior Writers, the sponsoring organization for the
Duluth Poet Laureate program, announces that applications
are now open for the selection of the 2010/2012 Duluth poet
laureate. Poets who have lived or worked in the Duluth,
Minnesota area for five of the past ten years, and who
provide the requested application materials according to the
guidelines, are eligible. The 2010/2012 Duluth poet laureate
will be selected by a committee of representatives from
Duluth's literary community, related businesses, colleges
and universities and those interested in the field of
poetry.
The Duluth Poet Laureate project was established in 2005.
Barton Sutter was chosen as its first poet laureate in 2006,
and Jim Johnson was selected as Duluth's second poet
laureate in 2008.
Since the establishment of this award, several Minnesota
cities have selected poet laureates including Saint Paul
(Carol Connolly), Red Wing (Robert Hedin), and Winona (James
Armstrong). Robert Bly was appointed Minnesota's first state
poet laureate in February of 2008.
The 2010/12 Duluth Poet Laureate will be awarded a $3,000
honorarium for a two-year term. Funding for the poet
laureate project is provided by area organizations that are
represented on the poet laureate selection committee.

2010/2012 Duluth poet laureate project can be found at the

Desk of the Duluth Public Library. The application deadline
for the 2010/2012 Duluth Poet Laureate program is February
15, 2010. A crowning ceremony and reception for the new
Duluth poet laureate will take place in May.

Editor’s Note: Since there are at least
two or three different sources for “monthly group”
information, all monthly groups must submit announcements
each month in order to be included in the LSW e-calendar. A
belated announcement will be mailed out within the week if
the correct information for November’s groups can be

** Thursday, January 14 from 7:00-8:00 pm - The Book Group
at Fitgers in the Fitger's Inn Board Room. We will discuss
Twelve Below Zero by Anthony Bukoski. This is a new book
group that will focus on books written by Minnesota and
Wisconsin authors. Please join us! Group members will
receive a 20% discount on the monthly title selection and

** January 21st, 6:30-8pm. In-Store Book Group: Chapter &
VerseA book group for adults to read and discussion young

new members always welcome.

** Monday, February 1, 7:30-10 pm - Peace Cabaret 2 - a
fundraiser for Sue Sojourner's Mississippi Civil Rights

People of that Place” photography exhibit, and enjoy Civil
Rights readings, entertainment and refreshments. Barton
Sutter, Claire Kirch and many others will read short pieces

Hamer, Stokely Carmichael, Sojourner Truth, and Barbara
Jordan. Funds will help Sue hire help to finish her memoir
and catalog her historical collections for transfer to the

** Beryl Singleton Bissell has an article: "Sculpting a
Beautiful Retreat," appearing in the February March issue of
Lake Superior Magazine. The article features the home of the
late Paul Granlund -- the well-known and highly acclaimed
Minnesota sculptor -- in Schroeder.
** Liz Minette had three poems cruising the Poetry Super
Highway, http://www.poetrysuperhightway.com, during the week
of December 14 - 20, 2009. She will participate in Poetry
Super Highway's open mic call-in on Sunday, January 10th,
2010. Liz would also like people to know what a cool
website http://www.poetrysuperhighway.com is.
** On Janurary 17, Shirley Wuchter will have a book reading
at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Manasquan, New Jersey,
the church where the late Michael D. Wuchter grew up.
Excerpts from his four books of sermons for the fall,
winter, spring and summer will be read. All four are

** WRITING WORKSHOP AND COURSE PROPOSALS WANTED - Lake
Superior Writers is developing a series of workshops on
various aspects of writing and the writing life. LSW
members are invited to submit proposals for either a
one-time workshop or a course. Contact the LSW office
(writers@lakesuperiorwriters.org) or Pamela Mittlefehldt
(pjmarch4@aol.com) for further information and application
forms.
** The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council is hiring an
Assistant Director. The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council is
looking for an individual knowledgeable about the regional
arts community, self motivated, computer literate and eager
to be part of an organization serving artists and arts
organizations in the Arrowhead. ARAC has an immediate
opening for a full-time Assistant Director to assist the
Executive Director, the Board of Directors and to oversee
selected grant programs which will receive funding from the
new Arts and Cultural Heritage Amendment passed in November,
2008. Interested individuals need to submit a cover letter
explaining their interest in the position and their skills
and abilities along with a resume by January 15, 2010. The
ARAC will fill this position by January 31, 2010.

** THE ARROWHEAD REGIONAL ARTS COUNCIL AWARDS $20,622 IN
REGIONAL GRANTS
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council recently awarded grants
totaling $11,655 in the McKnight/ARAC Rural and Community
Art Grants Program and $8,967 in the McKnight/ARAC Artist
Support Grant Program. The funding for these grants is made
available through an appropriation from The McKnight
Foundation and the Minnesota State Legislature. The arts
organizations and artists funded are as follows:
Rural and Community Art Grants Awarded
Northland Art Society - International Falls ($2,000) The
Northland Art Society will use this grant to produce a four
day abstract watercolor workshop with Karen Knutson, October
4 to 7, 2010, for International Falls area artists followed
by a community art show utilizing artwork produced during
the workshop.
Ely ArtWalk - Ely ($2,000) The Ely ArtWalk will use this
grant to produce their annual 11 day event featuring over
600 pieces of art, created by more than 150 local artists,
displayed in store windows during the Ely Winter Festival,
February 4 to 14, 2010.
Northshore Chamber Society - Two Harbors ($2,000) The
Northshore Chamber Society will use this grant to produce
four Lake County concerts in February, June and August of
2010 with professional musicians from across Minnesota.
Spirit Lake Poetry Series - Duluth ($725) Spirit Lake
Poetry Series will use this grant to produce outreach poetry
readings in Grand Rapids and Grand Marais in March and April
of 2010.
Ely Winter Festival - Ely ($2,000) Ely Winter Festival will
use this grant to produce the Snow Sculpture Symposium which
features the carving of snow sculptures by local, regional
and international artists in Whiteside Park in Ely from
February 4 to 14, 2010.
Crescendo Youth Orchestra - Hibbing ($930) Crescendo Youth
Orchestra will use this grant to take members of the youth
orchestra to a Minnesota Orchestra concert in the Twin
Cities on May 15, 2010.
Icebox Radio Theater - International Falls ($2,000) Icebox
Radio Theater will use this grant to improve the quality of
its audio theater programs by paying artists and
establishing a studio "home" for the 2009-2010 podcast
season.
Artist Support Grants Awarded
Paul Lundgren - Duluth ($3,000) Mr. Lundgren will use this
grant to host a weekly series of performances in February
2010 at Teatro Zuccone which will feature readings of his
literary works with other performance art incorporated
through a variety of collaborations with area artists.
Cecilia Ramon - Duluth ($1,930) Ms. Ramon will use this
grant to exhibit a body of work in three two person shows at
different venues in the Twin Cities: Augsburg College in
January, 2010; Concordia College in March, 2010; and the
Hopkins Center for the Arts in June, 2010.
Tim Kaiser - Duluth ($760) Mr. Kaiser will use this grant
to perform at the Art Damage Lodge in Cincinnati, Ohio, on
November 7, 2009, to attend a workshop in Cincinnati on
circuit-bent music and to network with other experiemental
musicians and instrument builders.
Gary Burt - Marble (750) Mr. Burt will use this grant to
attend the Springfed Arts Retreat for Songwriters in Harbor
Springs, Michigan, in November, 2009, where he will have the
opportunity for both classroom and individual teacher
interaction in the art and craft of songwriting.

LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.
Board
of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
committees and who volunteer.
