** Valentine’s Day - Lake Superior Writers Hosts a
Valentine Fundraiser “WORDS OF LOVE”!!
LSW is hosting a delightful event on Sunday, Feb 14 at 5
p.m. at the Unitarian building. A gourmet dinner, enjoyable
entertainment, and a silent auction are on the program.
Check for an invitation in that pile of unopened mail!!
RSVPs and $50 per person are due Feb. 9. Volunteers are
needed to help organize the auction and the event. For more

** LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS ANNOUNCES SEARCH FOR 2010/2012
DULUTH POET LAUREATE

Lake Superior Writers, the sponsoring organization for the
Duluth Poet Laureate program, announces that applications
are now open for the selection of the 2010/2012 Duluth poet
laureate. Poets who have lived or worked in the Duluth,
Minnesota area for five of the past ten years, and who
provide the requested application materials according to the
guidelines, are eligible. The 2010/2012 Duluth poet laureate
will be selected by a committee of representatives from
Duluth's literary community, related businesses, colleges
and universities and those interested in the field of
poetry.

The Duluth Poet Laureate project was established in 2005.
Barton Sutter was chosen as its first poet laureate in 2006,
and Jim Johnson was selected as Duluth's second poet
laureate in 2008. Since the establishment of this award,
several Minnesota cities have selected poet laureates
including Saint Paul (Carol Connolly), Red Wing (Robert
Hedin), and Winona (James Armstrong). Robert Bly was
appointed Minnesota's first state poet laureate in February
of 2008.

The 2010/12 Duluth Poet Laureate will be awarded a $3,000
honorarium for a two-year term. Funding for the poet
laureate project is provided by area organizations that are
represented on the poet laureate selection committee.

Application guidelines and more information about the
2010/2012 Duluth poet laureate project can be found at the

by writing to Duluth Poet Laureate Program, c/o Lake
Superior Writers, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132, Duluth,
Minnesota, 55811, by calling 218-722-3904, or by e-mailing
<pl@lakesuperiorwriters.org>. Application guidelines are
also available at the Reference Desk of the Duluth Public
Library.The application deadline for the 2010/2012 Duluth
Poet Laureate program is February 15, 2010. A crowning
ceremony and reception for the new Duluth poet laureate will
take place in May.

** LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS OPEN GENRE COMPETITION ON “HARD
TIMES”

Submissions may be complete works or excerpts in any of the
following genres: poetry, non-fiction, fiction, essay,
memoir, novel, short story, or play or movie script.
Submissions must be original, unpublished and unproduced.
Staged readings or workshop productions will not disqualify
a play or movie script. Submission length must be no longer
than 3,000 words or, in the case of poetry, 3 poems totaling
no more than 6 pages. The subject matter of each submission
must relate to the theme “Hard Times.” Manuscripts
must be typed. There must be two title pages, one that
includes the name of the submitted piece or pieces,
author’s name, address, email address and phone number and
a second that includes ONLY the name of the submitted piece
or pieces. Persons may submit only once. Submissions will
not be returned. All submissions will be blind reviewed by
a panel of judges. Submissions are due by Monday, March 1,
2010 (postmarked) to Lake Superior Writers, 1301 Rice Lake
Road, Suite 132, Duluth, MN 55811. A first place award of
$150, second place award of $100, and a third place award of
$50 will be given. Three runners up will also be chosen.
Award winners will be asked to read on Sunday, May 2 at 2:00
pm (note date/time change from previous announcement) at the
Harbor City School auditorium in Duluth. The entries of the
award winners and runners up will be published on the LSW
website. Only members of Lake Superior Writers may submit
their work; non-members may join Lake Superior Writers and
submit their work at the same time by including a check made
out to Lake Superior Writers for $35. Members of the LSW
board are not eligible to enter the contest.

two or three different sources for “monthly group”
information, all monthly groups must submit announcements
each month in order to be included in the LSW e-calendar. A

** Sue Sojourner’s documentary photography exhibit “The
Some People of that Place — 1960s Holmes County,
Mississippi: The Local People and Their Civil Rights
Movement” will be on display from Feb. 1-28, weekdays, 9
am - 5 pm at the Venue at Mohaupt Block, 2024 W Superior St,
Duluth (Old VFW). School field trips to the exhibit can be
scheduled by contacing Jebeh Edmunds, IDS 709
African-American Cultural Center Coordinator, at
218-733-2172. A presentation at the University of Minnesota
Duluth, "SUE SOJOURNER AND THE ’60s CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT," will be held on Tues., Feb 9, 2010 at 12 noon in
the Tweed Museum of Art. The Tweed event is sponsored by the
UMD Commission on Women and the Art Education program in the
School of Fine Arts.

This fundraiser will allow Sue to hire help to finish her
memoir and catalog her historical collections for transfer

PAUL LUNDGREN BRINGS HAPPY HOUR SHOWS TO TEATRO ZUCCONE
Duluth's infamous newspaper columnist and "very nice man"
Paul Lundgren will take to the stage. Joined by three
special guests, he'll host a series of performances called
"The Paul Lundgren Happy Hour." "It'll be sort of variety
show, but with less variety," Lundgren says. "There will be
comedy, music, poetry, wacky antics and good old-fashioned
shenanigans. "Special guests for the performances will be:
Feb. 10 | Musician Rachael Kilgour Feb. 17 | Actress Christa
Schulz Feb. 24 | Poet Ryan Vine Each "Paul Lundgren Happy
Hour" will be held at 6 p.m. at Teatro Zuccone in the
Zeitgeist Arts Building, 222 E. Superior St., Duluth.

** Sunday, Feb 7th at noon there will be a poetry reading in
the sanctuary of Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 North
11th Avenue East, Duluth, featuring local poets Sheila
Packa, Deborah Cooper, Gary Boelhower, Terry Falsani, and
others whose work appears in Beloved on the Earth: 150 Poems
of Grief and Gratitude (Holy Cow! Press: Duluth, 2009). The
musical group "Clear" will provide accompaniment. The event
is free and open to the public; books available for

** Friday, February 12 Mary Linda Sather will be making an
author's visit to Caribou Lake Elementary School in Saginaw,
MN to share her book "Boo Boo Bear's Mission" with the grade

** . Saturday, Feb 13, 1-2 pm Book Signing: Bud McClure*
/Divine Daisy /Transpersonal psychology is concerned with
the study of peak spiritual experiences. Those moments in
our lives when we feel connected to something greater than
ourselves. Divine Daisy takes us into that flow and
reinvigorates our sense of wonder at the mysteries of our
life

will be doing a "Connecting Hearts" workshop based on the
book to help military families enhance communication, stay
connected with deployed loved ones, and build healthy coping

** Sunday, Feb 14 and the following four Sundays from 3:00
to 5:00 pm. SACRED POETRY With Facilitators Deborah Cooper &
Ann Niedringhaus Poetry is a way of giving voice to what is
deepest in us. In this series, we will be reading and
reflecting on poems from a variety of faith traditions. We
will explore the nuances and gestures of our own
spirituality through the language of poetry: through the
poetry of others, through the practice of inner listening
and through the creation and sharing of our own poems. No
experience in writing poetry is necessary. We will meet at
First Lutheran Church, 1100 E Superior St, Duluth.(London
Road, west door under the canopy on Sundays: February 14,
21, 28 & March 7, 2010.

Arts, Virginia, MN Shelia Packa will give her second

** Saturday, Feb 27, 1-2 pm Book Signing: Kristin Swenson*
/Bible Babel /Based on the most recent scholarship, /Bible
Babel/ is a lively and very readable introduction to the
Bible—what it is, where it comes from, and what's in it.
Kristin Swenson is a professor of religious studies at
Virginia Commonwealth University's School of World Studies
and is a former Duluth resident.

Superior Writers is developing a series of workshops on
various aspects of writing and the writing life. LSW members
are invited to submit proposals for either a one-time
