Can it be? Really? Dare we hope for a second snowless month
in a row? As you anxiously scan the skies while raking
leaves and tending tulips, keep these April events in mind.

** Monday, Apr 12 from 6:30-8 pm Poetry from the Heart: An
Evening of Music and Poetry. Poems on grief and gratitude
from Duluth poets Cal Benson, Pamela Mittlefehldt, Jim
Perlman, Mara Hart, Connie Wanek, Gary Boelhower, Linda
Glaser, Deborah Cooper, and Shiela Packa  with music by Lynn
Brascala and Jodie Anderson. The Two Harbors Public Library.

LSW MONTHLY GROUPS

Editor’s Note: Since there are at least
two or three different sources for “monthly group”
information, all monthly groups must submit announcements
each month in order to be included in the LSW e-calendar. A
belated announcement will be mailed out within the week if
the correct information for November’s groups can be

** Monday Apr 12 at 6 pm - The Childrens Writer's Group is
scheduled to meet at Chester Creek Cafe. The writing prompt
for this month is a piece of writing based on a real
experience.

** Thursday Apr 15, 11:30 am - WRITERS' SQUARE TABLE at
Chester Creek Café. All are welcome.  April topic:
Children's Books You Have Loved.

** Sunday Apr 18, 1:30 pm - MEMOIR WRITERS' GROUP meets
downstairs at Chester Creek Cafe.  All are welcome.

** Wednesday, Apr 21 from 6-8 pm Third Wednesday

We will discuss The Wolf at Twilight: An Indian Elder's
Journey Through a Land of Ghosts and Shadows written by

** Friday, Apr 9 at 7:00 pm - The Spirit Lake Poetry Series
will celebrate April, National Poetry Month, with three
events (also see Apr 21 and 24 below). Three dynamic young
Duluth poets will read from their work at the Grand Marais
Public Library through the Spirit Lake Poetry Series
outreach program.  The poets are Yvonne Rutford, Ryan Vine,
and Julie Gard. The reading is presented jointly by Spirit
Lake Poetry Series and the Grand Marais Library, with
assistance from WTIP radio. It's free and open to the
public, and refreshments will be served. Support for the
reading is provided by the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council
through an appropriation from the Minnesota Legislature, and
from the Arrowhead Library System with funds from the
Heritage Amendment. For more information, call Linda

** Tuesday, Apr 13 from 4:00-8:00 pm - Book Release Event
and FUNdraiser for Friends of The Duluth Public Library.
Author Brian Freeman will sign copies of his new book The
Burying Place. He will read at 7:00 pm followed by Q&A. The
Bookstore will donate 10% of your purchase to Friends of The
Duluth Public Library. The Bookstore at Fitger's, 600 East

Itasca Community College will present an evening of poetry
at the campus Center for Continued Learning at Itasca
Community College. The featured readers are Duluth's Louis
Jenkins and Grand Rapids' own Steve Downing.

** Saturday, Apr 24 at 7:30 pm - a reading on featuring
Margaret Hasse and Norita Dittberner-Jax, both from the Twin
Cities. Theirs will be the last reading of the 2009/10
Spirit Lake Poetry Series season.  Somers Lounge, College of
St. Scholastica.

** Lost Hills Books is preparing a collection of poems
written in the ekphrastic tradition. LSW members are invited

** CALL FOR MN POETS AND WRITERS: The 2010 mnLIT cycle is
now taking submissions
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: SUNDAY, MAY 16 (midnight)  Get the full
call for writers, eligibility requirements, and detailed
instructions for submission on mnartists.org:

2010 mnLIT program:  mnLIT is a competitive literary program
presented by mnartists.org, which consists of the What Light
Poetry Project and the miniStories flash fiction series.
mnLIT showcases original work by Minnesota poets and writers
and is sponsored, in part, by The Onion/A.V. Club: Twin
Cities. Interested writers are welcome to submit work for
consideration in both the What Light and miniStories
competition.

** This summer you could be writing in a milk house, on a
farm, in the middle of an island, on Lake Superior ... with
12 excellent teachers as guides. Madeline School of the Arts
announces the debut of its Summer Writing Program. Workshops
in poetry, creative nonfiction, writing for children,
fiction, memoir, and creative process are offered from June
through August. Each workshop runs Monday through Friday and
includes one-on-one consultation with your instructor, plus
the opportunity to participate in a student/teacher reading.
Here's your chance to work with award-winning, accomplished
writers while enjoying the area's most inspiring setting.

** ARAC ANNOUNCES THE NEW ARTS AND CULTURAL HERITAGE
INDIVIDUAL ARTIST FELLOWSHIP DEADLINE AND THE RURAL AND
COMMUNITY ART GRANT DEADLINE
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council announces the upcoming
Arts and Cultural Heritage Individual Artist Fellowship
grant deadline for funding for individual artists and the
Rural and Community Art grant deadline for arts
organizations who reside in the following counties:  Atikin,
Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis.
These programs are made possible through funding by the
Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by
the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of
the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008; an
appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature; and The
McKnight Foundation.  The ARAC will offer a grant writing
workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Common Area of the Marshall
School Annex Building, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Duluth, two
weeks prior to the grant application deadline.
The dates for the upcoming grant writing workshop and grant
programs deadlines are:

Wednesday, Apr 14, 2010   Grant Writing Workshop.  ARAC
staff will provide technical assistance in preparing and
submitting an application, grant writing tips, project
eligibility , and other topics.  Artists interested in
applying for fellowship funding and arts organizations
interested in applying for project grant funding are
encouraged to attend this free workshop.

Friday, Apr 30, 2010  ARAC Arts and Cultural Heritage
Individual Artist Fellowship Grants applications deadline.
This program seeks to recognize, reward, and encourage
established and emerging regional artists.  This program is
designed to enable artists to set aside time to work to
achieve specific career goals, to purchase supplies and
materials, to participate in advanced study not related to a
degree program or to pursue other activities that will allow
them to meet their artistic goals.  Artists working in the
visual, literary, or performing arts are eligible to apply
to this program which has only one deadline per year. The
ARAC will award fellowships of $5,000 each and emerging
artist fellowships of $2,500 each.

Friday, Apr 30, 2010  McKnight/ARAC Rural and Community Art
Grants applications deadline.  This program provides project
support to arts groups located outside the Duluth Urban Area
and small, emerging arts organizations located inside the
Duluth Urban Area.  Arts groups may apply for up to $4,000
per application to produce or present arts activities that
impact the groups and the communities they serve.  This
program requires a 20% match for the funds requested.  This
program has three deadlines per year and an applicant may
submit up to two applications per deadline.

All members are invited to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year. Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes, and look over financial statements.

Board of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our committees and who volunteer.
