[Editor’s note: All submissions of upcoming
events—one-time events and regularly scheduled
events—must include in this order day, date, time, name of
event, specific location, name of organization or merchant,
contact person, and contact information if available. Events
are arranged by date rather than lumped together by store,
agency, or person. Normal Ariel 10-point is the font used in
the newsletter. No html formatting is used. Proofreading is
greatly appreciated. Remember that this is a calendar and
not a newsletter, so brevity is important. Thank you.]
LSW member Phil Fitzpatrick
is the e-calendar editor. Send your info to him at calendar@lakesuperiorwriters.org.

** Sunday, Oct 25 from 2 to 4 pm - A "Green"-themed poetry
reading by several local poets will take place at the John
Fisher-Merritt "Food Farm" southwest of Duluth, in
Wrenshall, Minnesota. The event is organized by Jim Johnson,
the 2008/2010 Duluth poet laureate and will take place in a
"big old barn." The reading is free and open to the public,
and refreshments will be provided. There is the possibility
of having children's activities provided. A short
presentation about sustainable farming will begin the
afternoon's program. Please call the Lake Superior Writers
office, 218-722-3094, for further information. Directions:
the address of said “big old barn” is 909 County Rd 4.
From Duluth, travel south on I-35. Take Exit 239. Head south
on Highway 45 through Carlton. Through no fault of your own,
Highway 45 transforms itself into County Road 1. Take County
Road 1 through Wrenshall and beyond to the intersection with
County Road 4. Take a right and look for the barn. Please
join us for this unique event celebrating poetry and
progressive farming in our region.
** LSW will sponsor an “open genre” writing contest with
the theme “hard times.” Submissions may be in any of the
following genres: poetry, memoir, essay, novel, short story,
play or movie script. All submissions must be original,
unpublished and unproduced. Staged readings or workshop
productions will not disqualify a play or movie script.
Submission length must be no longer than 4,000 words or, in
the case of poetry, no more than 3 poems with a maximum of 9
pages. The subject matter of each submission must relate to
the theme “hard times,” how we get through them and
maintain hope, what happens to our spirits and our stories,
who are the characters who carry on, get lost, or triumph in
spite of difficulty.
Manuscripts must be typed. There must be two title pages,
one that includes the name of the submitted piece or pieces,
author’s name, address, email address and phone number,
and a second that includes ONLY the name of the submitted
piece or pieces. Persons may submit in more than one genre,
but each submission must have its own title page.
Submissions will not be returned. All submissions will be
reviewed by a panel of judges. Submissions are due by
Monday, March 1, 2010 (postmarked) to Lake Superior Writers,
1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132, Duluth, MN 55811.
The top three places will receive monetary awards and three
runners up will also be chosen. All award winners will be
asked to read selections from their works at a performance
that is being planned for late spring, 2010. Only members of
Lake Superior Writers are eligible to participate in the
contest, but persons may join Lake Superior Writers and
submit their work at the same time by including a check made
out to Lake Superior Writers for $35. Additional
information regarding the awards and the reading date and
venue will be determined in the next two months. A final
contest description will be emailed to all LSW members
through the e-calendar and will also be published on the LSW
website and in local media. For information, call 722-3094.
