[Editor’s note: All submissions of upcoming
events—one-time events and regularly scheduled
events—must include in this order day, date, time, name of

are arranged by date rather than lumped together by store,

to the Lake Superior Writers Book Fair and Reading at the
Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 835 College St.,
Duluth, MN. Rub elbows with local literati, buy books for
Valentine's gifts, listen to short readings, and enjoy sweet
refreshments. Join the local writing community! For more

** LSW announces its first-ever playwriting competition. See

Editor’s Note: Since there are at least
two or three different sources for “monthly group”
information, all monthly groups must submit announcements
each month in order to be included in the LSW e-calendar. A
belated announcement will be mailed out within the week if
the correct information for November’s groups can be

** Jan Chronister's poem "Old Glory" will be published in
the forthcoming 2009 Dust & Fire anthology from Bemidji
State University. Her poem "Corn Story" has been accepted
for publication in the Empty Shoes anthology to be published
by Popcorn Press with proceeds to benefit the homeless. Jan
is also the recipient of the Woodrow Hall Jumpstart Award
and will use the $500 to implement a series of poetry
writing workshops on the Bad River Reservation in Odanah,
Wisconsin.
** Eric Chandler’s article "Supersonic Lessons Demand A
Plan" appeared in the Fall 2008 premier issue of 32 Degrees,
The Journal of Professional Snowsports Instruction. It
compared ski instruction to flight instruction.

** Sherry Rovig’s poem “Winter Walk” will be published
in the 2009 issue of Bemidji State University’s writing

** Friday, Feb 6, at 7:30 pm in Somers Lounge at the College
of St. Scholastica Reading by poet Michael Ryan, a Yale
Younger Poet and also a finalist for the National Book

** Sunday, Feb 8 - Dovetailed Press authors Kathryn
Nordstrom, Marlene Wisuri, and Larry Luukkonen will
participate in the "writers' room" at the annual Laskiainen
Sliding Festival in Palo. Their featured books will be The
Fish House Book: Life on Ice in the Northland, The Co-op
Label, Dovetailed Corners (from Holy Cow! Press), and
Between the Waters: Tracing the Northwest Trail from Lake
Superior to the Mississippi. They will be available to talk
about the publications and sign copies of the books.
** Saturday, Feb 14 at 2:00 pm - Book Signing: Children's
Author Mary Casanova will be signing: her book, Chrissa, One
Dog Canoe, Dog Watch. Special Note! The American Girl
Company will be giving away a "Chrissa" doll in a drawing.

** Saturday, Feb 14 at 7:30 pm in Somers Lounge at the
College of St. Scholastica. The Spirit Lake Poetry Series
will present its 13th annual St. David's Day Open Reading.
The event will include brief readings by noted local poets
such as Connie Wanek, Paul Lundgren, Ann Niedringhaus, Ryan
Vine, Ellie Schoenfeld and Duluth Poet Laureate Jim Johnson,
but anyone, published or not, is welcome to participate. The
first half of the evening is devoted to original work, the
second half to favorite poems by other authors. Readers must
limit themselves to three minutes in order to give equal
time to everyone. The brainchild of Minnesota Book Award
winner Louis Jenkins, the St. David's Day Open Reading
honors the anniversary of the canonization of St. David, the
patron saint of Wales. The event is designed to showcase the
variety of voices in the Northland and kiss the worst of
winter goodbye. Readers are urged to sign up at the start of
the event – or just send an email to
spiritlakepoetry@gmail.com with "add me" in the subject
line. Admission is free.
** Saturday, Feb 28 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm There will be a
Community Book Drive to benefit the United Way's "Big Red
Bookshelf" project. Just drive up and drop off your new or
"gently used" children's books. They will be made available
to children in our community ages birth through age 8. First

** ANNOUNCING THE FIRST ANNUAL LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS ONE ACT
PLAY COMPETITION
All submissions must be one-act plays of any genre except
musicals or puppet theatre. Scripts are to be original,
unpublished, and unproduced. Staged readings or workshop
productions will not disqualify a manuscript. Scripts
should be between 30 and 60 minutes in length. Content and
subject matter are completely open. Manuscripts must be
typed. There must be two title pages, one that includes the
name of the play, author(s), address, email address and
phone number and a second that includes ONLY the name of the
play. Send one copy of the script bound with a binder clip
or paper clip (not stapled). Scripts will not be returned.
All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges.
Submit plays by Monday, April 13, 2009 (postmarked) to Lake
Superior Writers, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132, Duluth, MN
55811. A first place award of $150 and a second place award
of $75 will be given. Both plays will be performed in a
“reader’s theatre” format on Sunday, May 24, 2009 at
2:00 pm at The Play Ground in the Technology Center
Building, 11 East Superior St, Duluth. Only members of Lake
Superior Writers may submit scripts, but you may join Lake
Superior Writers and submit your script at the same time by
including a check made out to Lake Superior Writers for $35.
** February 1 is the deadline to nominate titles for the
Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards. Titles published in 2008
that are substantially representative of northeastern
Minnesota may be entered in one of six categories:
General Nonfiction
Memoir/Creative Nonfiction
Fiction
Poetry
Art/Photography
Children's Literature
Winners of the 21st annual Northeastern Minnesota Book
Awards will be announced at an afternoon celebration on May
17 at UMD. Prizes will include $300 and a plaque for the
winner in each category. To nominate a book, visit the NEMBA

nomination form, and send it along
with one copy of the book and the $25 entry fee (made
payable to UMD Library) for each title to UMD Library, c/o

** Intermedia Arts 2009 SASE/Jerome Award Finalists
Announced! Each year, Intermedia Arts awards grants of up to
$5,000 to emerging Minnesota writers. This year’s
applications were narrowed down to 18 finalists by our
dedicated community judges: Julie Landsman (creative
nonfiction) Sharon Chmielarz (poetry), and John Jodzio
(fiction). Grant winners will be announced in late February
2009. The 2009 Finalists are:

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP Member Involvement: We value our membership
and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for
LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.
Board
of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
committees and who volunteer.
