[Editor’s note: All submissions of upcoming
events—one-time events and regularly scheduled
events—must include in this order day, date, time, name of
event, specific location, name of organization or merchant,
contact person, and contact information if available. Events
are arranged by date rather than lumped together by store,
agency, or person. Normal Ariel 10-point is the font used in
the newsletter. No html formatting is used. Proofreading is
greatly appreciated. Remember that this is a calendar and
not a newsletter, so brevity is important. Thank you.]

LSW member Phil Fitzpatrick is the e-calendar editor. Send your info to him at calendar@lakesuperiorwriters.org.

Yes, it’s already August. July went by so fast and was so
crowded with events expected and unexpected that I scarcely
had a moment to sit down and do the e-calendar. I’m very
sorry. But - here, back and better than ever, is your August
LSW E-Calendar.

Of Special Note:

** Saturday, August 8, 5 - 8 pm. Northern Prints Gallery’s
10th Anniversary Opening. Free and open to the public. The
NPA has come a long way from our modest beginnings -- six
printmakers with a dream gathered around a dining room table
in the winter of 1999 -- to our present membership of 38
printmakers from around the state and beyond; our own
gallery where we have had continuous exhibits of original
prints since 2003 -- sowing broad prints awareness in the
region plus name recognition for our members throughout the
state; three project grants from the Arrowhead Regional Arts
Council -- which have sponsored our first public exhibit in
1999 and a traveling group portfolio exhibit; three exciting
collaborative exhibits with the Lake Superior Writers poets
resulting in award-winning books of these shows; and our
recent group exhibit at the Bloomington Arts Center. The
"10" exhibit -- ten years from our first public exhibit at
Lizzards Gallery, Duluth -- seems an appropriate time to
celebrate with the city that has helped us grow!
Please join us on Saturday, August 8, from 5 - 8 p.m., for
the "10" show opening, as we bring the Bloomington show home
to Duluth. New works and old favorites will be on view in
this special selection of some the finest works our
printmakers have produced during this exciting ten-year
growing period. Among the artists exhibiting are: Betsy
Bowen, Gaylord Schanilec, Robert Repinski, Joel Cooper, Ann
Jenkins, Tom Rauschenfels, Gendron Jensen, Larry Basky,
Christine Herman, Cecilia Lieder, Anna Marie Pavlik, Beckie
Prange, Kurt Seaberg, and Nick Wroblewski. Meet the
artists, browse portfolios full of many more prints examples
as well as the history of the group, and enjoy the great
food and music in the gallery or out in the garden. The
exhibit will be open through October 10.
The Northern Prints Gallery is located in the lower floor of
a vintage 1891 Duluth home, and holds the largest selection
of artist made prints in northern Minnesota. It presents
four exhibits annually of original prints by the members of
the Northern Printmakers Alliance.

WORKSHOPS/DEADLINES/CALLSback to top

** ARAC Announces Individual Artist Grant Application
Deadlines
The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council announces upcoming grant
deadlines for funding for individual artists who reside in
the following counties: Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca,
Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis. This year, the ARAC will
combine all of the individual artist grant programs into one
program -- the McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Support
Program.
The dates for the upcoming grant writing workshop and the
grant program deadlines are:
Wednesday, Aug 12 - Grant Writing Workshop. Jean Sramek,
Program Assistant, will provide technical assistance in
preparing and submitting an application, grant writing tips,
project eligibility, and other topics. Artists interested
in applying for Artist Support Grant funding are encouraged
to attend this workshop. The free grant writing workshop
will take place from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Common Area of
the Marshall School Annex Building, 1301 Rice Lake Road,
Duluth.
Friday, Aug 28 and Friday, Nov 27 - McKnight/ARAC Artist
Support Grant Application Deadlines. The McKnight/ARAC
Individual Artist Support Program grants provide support and
assistance to regional artists from all cultural backgrounds
at various stages in their careers. It encourages artistic
development by taking advantage of an impending, concrete
opportunity; nurtures artistic creativity through an artist
generated opportunity; and recognizes the contributions
individual artists make to the cultural environment of the
Arrowhead Region. Artists working in contemporary or
traditionally based visual, literary, performing or media
arts are eligible to apply to this program which has three
deadlines per year. Artists may apply as an individual or
as part of collaboration. An impending, concrete
opportunity must be a unique, short-term opportunity that
will have a significant impact on the artist's career. This
program is also designed to allow artists the time to
achieve career goals, to purchase supplies and materials, to
participate in advanced study not related to a degree
program, or to pursue other activities that will allow them
to meet their artistic goals. Awarded opportunities must be
completed within twelve months of the date the artist is
notified of the award. An artist may request up to $3,000.
To request guidelines or request additional information,
please call or write: Jean Sramek, Program Assistant,
Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite
