This year is the third biennial collaboration between the
poets of the Lake Superior Writers and the printmakers of
the Northern Printmakers Alliance at the Northern Prints
Gallery. Prior exhibits have been enthusiastically attended
by hundreds of visitors and participants. This year's theme
of a guide to the Northland experience drew nearly 150 poems
entries and 38 prints. As we have done for the past exhibits
of this collaboration, a book of the poems and prints will
be produced. The book from the last collaborative exhibit,
in 2006, was a finalist in the Minnesota Book Awards for
2007.This natural pairing of prints and poetry, and the
united forces of some of the finest regional artists in both
categories, will be a celebration of the Northland for all
to enjoy. This exhibit also marks the fifth anniversary for
the Northern Prints Gallery, which is dedicated to the
exhibition and sales of original prints made by regional
artists. There are currently 40 printmakers represented by
the gallery.

Celebrations
** Northern Lights Books and Gifts in Duluth, Minnesota,
celebrates our 15th Anniversary this August. Owner, Anita
Zager, says proudly, “We have more than survived. Our
success is due to many factors, including a rich collection
of regionally related books and high quality, local authors.
We have a great location that gives us a strong summer
season. We are a full service bookstore. We are active and
selective in choosing inventory. And we believe it is
important to support local literary efforts. Our staff
enjoys talking about books with our customers and offering
excellent customer service.” Anita Zager trained as a
bookseller in Naperville, IL during the late 70’s at what
is now Anderson’s Bookstore. Anita is a past president of
the Midwest Booksellers Association and an active member of
the Canal Park Business Association. Over the years we have
developed experience at putting on large scale events, most
notably the Harry Potter parties held at Duluth’s Historic
Union Depot, with 1000 revelers attending the last Midnight
Party in July of 2007. In part because of limited space in
the store (1700 sq ft), but in larger part because of the
spirit of community, our most successful events are those
where we partner with local groups off site. We’ve
hosted, or helped to host, Mitch Albom, Terry Gross, Karen
Armstrong, Greg Mortenson, Jan Brett, Krista Tippett, Lorna
Landvik, Mary Oliver and Ray Suarez, to name a few.
We have planned a special series in September to celebrate
our literary ties in the community. Bestselling St. Paul
mystery writer, William Kent Krueger, starts us out
September 4th with a dinner at the Radisson Hotel
(reservations required) to release his new book, Red Knife.
On Thursday, September 11 in the bookstore, we host a
reading by Spike Carlsen of his book, A Splintered History
of Wood. We then join together for a night to remember
Minnesota author, Carol Bly, and her last published work,
the novel Shelter Half at the Duluth Woman’s Club,
September 18th (reservations required). For more
information, please visit us online at www.norlights.com or
call us at 722-5267 or 800-868-8904 to make reservations or
inquiries.
