** TODAY! Saturday, Nov 1, from 2 - 4 pm – in The Green
Room at the Duluth Public Library, 520 West Superior Street,
Duluth, Minnesota. Please join us for a panel discussion on
"The Future of Poetry" led by 2008-10 Duluth Poet Laureate
Jim Johnson, with Ryan Vine, Chris Godsay, Jennifer Derrick,
Paul Lundgren, and Cecilia Lieder. There will be discussion
and demonstration of different formats for presenting
poetry: via the internet, rap music, poetry slams, blogging,
and print publication of poetry chapbooks and books.
Sponsored by Lake Superior Writers and community
organizations. Free and open to the public, with
refreshments provided by The Friends of the Duluth Public

AND - A Look Ahead:
** Thursday, Dec. 11, LSW and the UW-Superior Writing Center
invite everyone to attend *Twelve Below Zero*, a reading and
book-signing event with Superior, Wisconsin, fiction writer
Tony Bukoski. Bukoski is a Professor in the English
Department at UW-Superior, and we celebrate his lifetime of
writing about the magic to be found in the everyday world of
Superior. We particularly celebrate the release by Holy Cow!
Press of an updated, revised version of Dr. Bukoski's
original short story collection, Twelve Below Zero. Dessert,
coffee, and tea will be served. 7 p.m., Multicultural
Center, 232 Old Main, UW-Superior, Belknap and Catlin,
Superior. Free and open to the public. People may park free
in any of the lots, except for the reserved lots and spaces,
meters, and handicapped spaces (unless they have a permit).

** Terry Falsani's poems, "Snow Squalls" and "The
Ringbearer" received honorable mention in the recent
Brainerd Writers' Alliance annual writing contest. Poetry
judge Patricia Kirkpatrick named two winning poems and three
honorable mentions.
** Anne Simpson’s new book GROWING DOWN: Poems for an
Alzheimer's Patient, has just published by Calyx Press.
** Phil Fitzpatrick’s new book, A Beautiful Friendship:
The Joy of Chasing Bogey Golf (Calyx Press Duluth, $19.95)
is now available at Northern Lights Books and Gifts as well
as from the author at fitztrick@gmail.com.
** Lost Hills Books of Duluth is pleased to announce the
publication of "Staying Blue," poems by Gibbons Ruark.
Gibbons has had a distinguished career in American Poetry

** Saturday, Nov 8 Cecelia Lieder’s Annual Solo Exhibit of
Woodcuts and Stone Lithographs with an Opening Holiday Tea
from Noon to 5:00 Lieder’s new works from 2008 will be
featured along with her well know woodcuts & lithographs.
Lieder is one of the region’s premier printmakers & her
annual solo show is an opportunity to view the full range of
her prints. Her celebration of the landscape of the
Northland in richly colored woodcuts is a special feature of
this artist’s work. “Oggi” means “today” in
Italian, so look for some surprises as well. Lieder is the
director of the Northern Prints Gallery which represents 40
regional printmakers and offers the widest selection of
artist made prints in the region. She is a past recipient of
the George Morrison Artist Award (2007), the Depot
Foundation Artist Award (2006), a McKnight ARAC Artist
Fellowship and other honors. She is a small press publisher
and her books will also be available, notably three new

bells taken by the U.S. military as war trophies, one which
spent time in Duluth before being returned to Japan.

America's most distinguished poets, will read her work in

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP Member Involvement: We value our membership
and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for
LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.
Board
of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
committees and who volunteer.
