LSW ACTIVITIES AND NEWS.

* NOTEWORTHY ON PACT-TV Thanks to Lake Superior Writers' member Wendy Grethen and her husband, a video of the Noteworthy performance will be shown May 5 (Monday) at 2 p.m., 7 p.m. and May 6 (Tuesday) at 6 a.m. on PACT-TV. It is an hour and a half long. PACT-TV said they will also run it other times to where there is space.

* Saturday, May 17 from 2-4 p.m. Lake Superior Writers will offer a writing workshop with Bill Holm as part of the 20th Anniversary celebration of NEMBA. This will be an excellent opportunity to spend two hours with Holm, who is also the keynote speaker for the NEMBA awards ceremony on Sunday, May 18. The workshop will be held in the Rotunda of the UMD Library, Cost is $35 for LSW members; $40 for non-members. Sunday, June 8, 3 - 5 pm, Quaker Meeting House, 1802 East 1st Street, Duluth Lake Superior Writers’ members are invited to read their work: Memoir, poetry, prose, non-fiction, and essay. The event is open for members to read and sell their books. Contact 724-4985 by June 2 to be included in the program. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served. A brief LSW Annual Meeting will held for board elections

* The Children's Writers Group will meet Monday May 12th, 6:30 p.m. at Amazing Grace Bakery. If you like writing for children, come join us and bring some of your work to share with us! Email any questions to Julesmj2@aol.com.

* Bruce Henricksen received an Editor's Prize from Minnetonka Review (Winter `08) for his poem "July Afternoon: Duluth."

* Phil Fitzpatrick’s poem, “At Some Distance” was awarded second place in the open division of the Dylan Days Poetry Competition. He and other winners will read their works at Dylan Days on May 24 from 2:30?5:30 at the Hibbing Community College Theater.

* Mary Ellen Ryall was featured in the Butterfly Corner, "Washburn Country Register," April 16, 2008, p. 19. Ryall is the executive director of Happy Tonics, a nonprofit organization that is implementing the Monarch Butterfly Habitat in Shell Lake on Shell Lake city property. AREA LITERARY EVENTS back to top

* The Duluth Art Institute is inviting artists (and writers) to an Art Attack on Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 5-8 pm at the Lincoln Center building, 2229 W. 2nd St, Duluth. Art Attack is a subversive spontaneous event featuring underground artists as well as alternative mediums. The exhibition is targeted at the underground and outsider artists of the area. Artists are invited to bring a single piece of art to install or present in or around the Lincoln Center Gallery. All visual and alternative art mediums such as fashion and performance art are encouraged. Musicians and poets are also welcome. There are no restrictions to size or content, they only ask that the property of the DAI is not damaged or defaced in any way. Creative spontaneity is the goal of this event. A small reception will be provided by the Duluth Art Institute. Artists and event-goers are also welcome to bring potluck food to share. Bring your favorite food art! Pass the information on. * The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council (ARAC) returns to Grand Marais to present the 10th Annual Arrowhead Arts Awards on Friday, May 9, 2008. A short ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in the Betsy Bowen Studio, 301 1st Avenue West in Grand Marais, MN. The awards ceremony will be part of the Jazz Art Underground Sneak Preview and will feature live music by Jazz Pianist Chris Gillis. This year’s award recipients are author and visual artist Betsy Bowen and author and photographer Jim Brandenburg.

* Jess Lourey will sign copies of August Moon, the latest in her Lefty-nominated Murder-by-Month series, on June 19 at Fitger's bookstore from 6-7:30 and June 20 at the Duluth Barnes and Noble from 4-6.

* June 12, at 7 p.m., Northern Lights Books & Gifts is sponsoring a reception and reading of Anthony Bukoski's fifth short story collection, North of the Port, which will be published on May 31. The event will be held at Barker's Island Inn. For reservations, call 218-722-5267.

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE LSW MEMBERSHIP Member Involvement: We value our membership and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year. Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes, and look over financial statements.

Board of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our committees and who volunteer.
