[Editor’s note: All submissions of upcoming
events—one-time events and regularly scheduled
events—must include in this order day, date, time, name of
event, specific location, name of organization or merchant,
contact person, and contact information if available. Events
are arranged by date rather than lumped together by store,

THIRD BIENNIAL POETRY AND PRINTS COLLABORATION AT NORTHERN
PRINTS GALLERY
LSW members are invited to enter a new writing contest.
Writers can enter as many poems as they wish, and choose any
number of partner images. (See the contest website). LSW
will select a number of different poems for each print --
and hopes to enlarge the book that is published. The title
of the show and the chapbook is "TRAIL GUIDE: A Northland
Experience in Prints and Poetry." The concept is to offer a
shortcut to immersion in the northland experience for
visitors and tourists. Books will be offered for sale at
gift stores, tourist shops, and book stores throughout the
Northland. The exhibit will run from August 28 to October
25. Poets will read their poems at the opening on Thursday,
August 28, from 5 - 8 pm at Northern Prints Gallery, 318
North 14th Avenue East, Duluth. Printmaker’s work and more

SUBMISSIONS: Submissions must be made by email by July
11 and will be received by Cal Benson at
<calbenmn@gmail.com>. Selected poets will be notified by
email, no later than July 20.
SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR THE CHAPBOOK. The project needs 100
subscriptions of $75 to cover printing costs for the larger
book which would sell for $25. Each subscriber will receive
five books of the large version or seven of the small
version which sells for $15. Subscription pledges must be in
to Cecilia Lieder <cele@northernprintsgallery.com> by July
15, 2008 with checks sent to Lieder at the Northern Prints
Gallery, 318 North 14th Avenue East, Duluth, MN 55805 no
later than Aug 1.

** Mary Ellen Ryall writes for the Butterfly corner,
Washburn County Register. The June 4th article was about the
American copper butterfly that visited the Monarch Butterfly
Habitat on a warm sunny Sunday morning. The June 11 article
was about the new split rail fence that is going up in the
Monarch Butterfly Habitat being implemented in Shell Lake.
The June 28 article was about the Cecropia moth that
appeared and caused quite a stir from the curious neighbors
living near the habitat. Ryall's article Lakeland Manor
Residents take a ride appeared in the July 1 issue of
Washburn County Register. She is on the Washburn County
Transportation Council and promotes public bus
transportation in Washburn County.

** Eric Chandler's article "The Old Man of the Mountain" was
published in the June issue of Vermont Sports Magazine. It
is about aging, using the 1984 father-son running of the
Mount Washington Hill Climb running race in NH as a
backdrop.
** The June 16 Boston Globe newspaper under the heading
"Good Fiction by Unfamiliar Writers" recommended Anthony
Bukoski's "North of the Port" as one of five "short gems"
worthy of summer reading. A May 15 Booklist review called
the book "a fine fifth collection" of the author's stories.
The review concluded" "Bukoski's heart-piercing, poetic
fiction of place and ethnicity makes one wish to be Polish,
too, despite the heartbreak." Additionally, a cover photo of
and an article on the author appear in the summer number of
"Wisconsin People & Ideas" magazine.
** “Dovetailed Corners,” an exhibition based on the book
by Duluth poet laureate, Jim Johnson, and photographer
Marlene Wisuri will be on display during July at the North
End Arts Council Gallery at 1323 Broadway (Rug Mug
building). The exhibit features prose poems in English and
in Finnish translations, along with Wisuri's photographs and
some vintage photos by J. C. Hendricks. The award winning
book was published by Holy Cow! Press of Duluth. Books
published by Dovetailed Press LLC of Duluth will be
available in the Tori (marketplace) in booth 39 at FinnFest
2008 on July 23-27 at the DECC. Featured authors are Jim
Johnson, Marlene Wisuri, Kathryn Nordstrom, Jim Sheetz, and
Larry Luukkonen. The writers will be featured in several
programs during FinnFest including poetry writing, history
as inspiration, the Great Fires of 1918, and others. See

Reading at Fairlawn Mansion. The following poets from Lake
Superior Writers organization will read: Cal Benson, Gary
Boelhower, Phil Fitzpatrick, Pamela Mittlefehldt and Lezlie
Oachs. Lake Superior Day is an annual event celebrated by
cities, towns, states and provinces bordering Lake Superior
(held on the third Sunday in July) that celebrates all of
the ways our lives are touched by the world's largest
freshwater lake. This special day encourages us to think
about our connection to the Lake and reminds us how
important this natural resource is to our everyday living.
Each of these published poets will share original material
that relates to the lake, the region and its natural beauty,
and the issues and concerns that arise from living on the
shores of Lake Superior.

** mnartists.org announces a call for flash fiction for
“miniStories,” a quarterly short-short fiction
competition and publication project. Deadline for
submissions: Sunday, July 13, 2008.
Submissions of up to three previously unpublished stories,
in any genre and between 5-500 words in length, may be
submitted for consideration. Email your stories as
attachments (preferably as Word docs) to
stories@mnartists.org. You must be a resident of Minnesota
and a registered artist on mnartists.org (it's free to
register) to enter this contest. Our judges for this
round-Electric Arc Radio writer/performer and English
professor Brady Bergeson, novelist William Walsh (Without
Wax), and literary agent Dawn Frederickson (Red Sofa
Literary)-will select twelve winning stories to be
published, four stories per month for the next three months,
on mnartists.org. A grand-prize-winner will be selected from
the 12 miniStories winning authors, who will be awarded a
paid commission to publish another longer-format short
story on mnartists.org and its e-mag access+ENGAGE. See:

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP Member Involvement: We value our membership
and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for
LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.
Board
of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
committees and who volunteer.
