MARTHA BIGALK’S poem "We
Traverse Afar" will be reprinted in the May issue of
“Minnesota Medicine,” a publication of the Minnesota
Medical Association. It first appeared as a Verbal Rorschach
in “Speakeasy,” Spring 2005.
TIM J. BRENNAN’S one act play
"Show Me a Hero" has been selected as part of Ten
Grand Production's "Cold Cuts Reading Series" on
Mon, May 21 at the National Comedy Theater, 347 W. 36th St,
NYC.
ANNE CROOK will be a featured speaker
at Mayfest: A Celebration of Learning, at the College of St.
Scholastica in Duluth on May 22. She will speak on the history
of Duluth in connection with her book "Tales of Spirit
Mountain.”
JEANNIE EDDY’S short story, "Back
In The Saddle Again," was published in the Spring 2007
issue of “Fifty Something Magazine.”
KONNIE LEMAY of Lake Superior Port
Cities Inc. announced the publication of the children's book,
“Agate: What Good is a Moose?” by local author
Joy Morgan Dey and artist Nikki Johnson. The early response
to the book is strong.

CHERYL REITAN read selections from
her fiction work at An Evening of Reading and Storytelling
on Fri, March 30 at Amazon Bookstore Cooperative in Minneapolis.
MARY ELLEN RYALL’S article "Honey
bee die-off concerns local beekeepers" was published
in the “Washburn Country Register” in March. Diane
Dryden, Washburn County Register, wrote about Ryall's tea
party in "Valentines by Lakeland" recently. In April,
Dryden wrote about Ryall's monarch butterfly conservation
work in "Butterfly gardens", which was published
by “Washburn County Register.” Ryall's botanical
photography was also published in the newspaper in April.
Ryall is the owner of Happy Tonics and her web site, which
promotes habitat for the monarch butterfly can be viewed at

FRANCINE STERLE has a reading planned
for Sat, May 5, at 5 pm, at MacRostie Art Center, 405 1st
Avenue NW, in Grand Rapids, MN . She will read from “Nude
in Winter.”
SHIRLEY DYER WUCHTER signed a contract
with CSS Publishing Company in Lima, Ohio to publish a second
book of her deceased husband's sermons. The first book is
“Uplifting Christ Through Autumn, Sermons for the Fall
Season.” The new book is sermons for the winter season,

19th Annual Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards at the Weber
Music Hall, UMD. 38 books have been nominated this year, and
awards will be given in three categories: Fiction/Poetry;
Nonfiction/Memoir; and Children’s Literature. Duluth’s
poet laureate Barton Sutter will emcee, and Will Weaver, a
writer of fiction for adult and young adult readers, will
be the featured speaker. Weaver’s collection "A
Gravestone Made of Wheat and Other Stories" has won many
awards, including the Minnesota Book Award for Fiction. The
title story was recently produced as the independent film

SUMMER READING SERIES. Read to tourists
and locals in Duluth and Superior this summer. Contact Cal
Benson at calbenmn@chartermi.net or 218-724-2724. LSW writers
will conduct short readings in hotels on the water, on the
Lake Walk, at Parks and Rec events, coffee houses, pubs, and
perhaps from the stage in Leif Erickson Park. (All we really
need to pull this off is a place to plug in our new microphone--and
readers, of course.) Writers' selections should reflect the
Northern Minnesota/Wisconsin region.

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND

and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for
LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.

of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
