PUBLISHING SEND-OFF PARTY
Sat. Jan. 27, 3-7 pm, LSW Conference Room ,1215 Rice Lake
Rd. Resolved to send out your work to get published this new
year? Stop by at the LSW's Send-Off Party. We'll have publishing
guides, a photocopier, a computer or two, and, most importantly,
a creative and supportive environment. All you need to bring
are your pieces for submission, envelopes and stamps (and
a snack to share if you're able). Need info? Contact John

LSW WRITERS’ SQUARE TABLE
Jan. 18, 11:30 am, The next Writers' Square Table will meet
in the annex room at Sara's Table. Topic: Setting Writing

WRITING LIFE STORIES
LSW member Donna Schilling will facilitate a free 6-week Monday
memoir class,
Writing Life Stories, Jan 8 through Feb 12, 9-10:30 a.m. at
Portman Square. “Writing Our Life Stories,” is
a community outreach program designed to offer beginning writers
assistance in writing their memoirs. Donna expects the class
participants to mostly include seniors. After the pilot program,
she hopes to expand it and offer it at other community centers
in the city and assisted living facilities and/or nursing
homes. If you’re interested in attending or helping
Donna launch this program, please contact her at 525-1012.
She is looking for writers who would be interested in facilitating
future classes or assisting in overseeing writing groups that
may wish to continue to work together after completion of
the classes.
WINTER READING
Feb 11, Sun, 2 pm, Lake Superior Writers reading at Barnes
& Noble Bookstore: Gary Boelhower, John McCormick, &
Hollis Norman. Cello music by Kathy McTavis at 1:45. Refreshments
will be served. From 9 am – 9 pm a bookfair fundraiser
for Lake Superior Writers will be held. Vouchers will be available
at Barnes & Noble. A percentage of purchases will be donated
to Lake Superior Writers. Barnes & Noble Booksellers,

LISA POJE ANGELOS: has a poem "Letter
to Self Before Birth in 1964" accepted for publication
in the 2007 Bemidji State University “Dust and Fire”
anthology.
BERYL SINGLETON BISSELL author of The
Scent of God, will be reading and speaking at Barnes &
Noble (Miller Hill Mall) "Educator Appreciation Breakfast,"
on January 20 at 9 am.
LSW Members JIM FREEMAN, KARI JACOBSON,
JOHN MCCORMICK, and SUE SOJOURNER of the Lake Superior Writer's
Fiction and Poetry Group read their poetry in Studio 501,
in the Washington Studios Artist Cooperative on December 28.
The poets read the work of people who inspired them and then
read their own work. Jill Hinners also was part of the program.
JESS LOUREY, the author of a comic
caper murder mystery series set in Battle Lake, Minn., will
be signing copies of “May Day,” the first in the
series, and “June Bug,” the second in the series
this spring at Northern Lights on Saturday, 3/31/07 from 12-1
and at Barnes & Noble on Sunday, 4/1/07, from noon-2.
LIZ MINETTE will read her poetry Saturday,
January 13 at the Art Shanties at Medicine Lake - http://www.artshantyprojects.org
- She will be reading along with other poets who have been
published in the "What Light" Poem of the Week on
mnartists.org site. This event is a part of the "What
Light" publication and reading series sponsored by mnartists.org
and Magers & Quinn Booksellers.
SHEILA PACKA, poet, and Kathy McTavish,
cellist have collaborated on “Dear Bird,” a music
& poetry CD and chapbook, with cover art designed by visual
artist Marcie Wood.
MARY ELLEN RYALL, member of St. Croix
Writers' Group, published the articles “Senior outing
promotes fun and gardening” in November and “Organic
foods, herbs, and wild game make a feast” in October
in “Senior Focus.” Ryall has also been published
about in the “Washburn County Register.” She has
a web site, Happy Tonics, which promotes senior activities,
organic gardening, and sanctuary for the monarch butterfly:

Duluth Art Institute's Lincoln Center. Arts Intersect Workshop.
Different art forms share common aspects of composition and
process. Learn through crossing boundaries: play with words,
images, movement and sound. No skills or experience required.
Classes begin with simple exercises and guided improv, free-writing,
doodling. Explore self-expression and ways to claim and sculpt
space. Inspirational for artists of all methods and mediums--inspiration
to see beyond the creative walls.
Lisa McKhann, founder of Project Lulu, has created mixed-art
performances like "Full Moon, Arise," and "Sounding
Duluth." She's also taught workshops thru the Loft and
LSW, and teaches adult Modern dance thru Minnesota Ballet.

A performance by Sheila Packa, poet, and Kathy McTavish, cellist,
celebrating a music & poetry CD and chapbook, “Dear
Bird,” CDs and chapbooks for sale.
Jan. 25, Thurs. Noon and 7 pm, Lake
Superior College. A Lake Superior College Writers' Series
workshop: Writing and Illustrating for Children with Kelly
Rauzi and Mila Horak will be offered from noon-1 pm, in E2154,
Lake Superior College, 2101 Trinity Road, Duluth. Learn successful
processes and surprising insights into how to publish a children's
book from Kelly and Mila, fresh from publishing “Fearless
John: The Legend of John Beargrease.” To register, contact

a reading and discussion will be held in the Minnesota Room.

Jan 28, Sun., 9 and 11 am, at the Unitarian
Universalist Church at 145 W. Winona Street, Duluth. Café
Au Lake: The artist collaborative performance group will present
"As the Spirit Moves Us," an energizing celebration
of the creative spirit is arranged and directed by Marilyn
Mayry and features music by Mary Lou Williams, Dave Winchester,
Kathy McTavish, poetry by Ellie Schoenfeld and Sheila Packa,
choreography by Lisa McKhann, and visual art by Marcie Wood.
Feb. 2, Fri., 7:30 pm, Somers Hall,
College of St. Scholastica. Thomas Lux will give a reading
as part of this year's Poets on Poetry event at the College
of St. Scholastica. Author of 17 collections of poems, Tom
Lux has been hailed as “one of the poets on whom the
future of the genre depends.” Tom’s been a finalist
for the Los Angeles Times Book Award in Poetry, has received
three National Endowment for the Arts grants, a Guggenheim
Fellowship and the $50,000 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for
his sixth collection, “Split Horizons.” Tom currently
holds the Bourne chair in poetry at the Georgia Institute
of Technology. Free and open to the public. Refreshments will
be provided.

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP Member Involvement: We value our membership
and encourage your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for
LSW members is held in the spring. All members are invited
to participate. Financial reports and a summary of the year's
activities are presented to the membership at the annual meeting
for review. The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year.
Members are invited to attend board meetings, review minutes,
and look over financial statements.
Board
of Directors: LSW is governed by an 11-member board. Potential
board members are interviewed by a nomination committee and
presented to the board for vote. In the past, many board members
have been chosen from the group of members who serve on our
committees and who volunteer. Contact
