Oct 3, Tue, 6:30 pm - LEADING A WRITER’S GROUP: A GATHERING
FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED FACILITATORS will be offered at the
Lake Superior Writers meeting room, Marshall School Annex,
1301 Rice Lake Road, Duluth. Lake Superior Mara Hart, Cheryl
Reitan and others from LSW will host the meeting. Refreshments

Oct 21, Sat 7:30 pm. DULUTH POET LAUREATE INAUGURAL READING.
FREE: Lake Superior Writers announces the Inaugural Reading
for the first Duluth Poet Laureate, Barton Sutter at Weber
Music Hall at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Sutter’s
brother, Ross Sutter, a renowned musician will join him. A
reception will follow.
Oct 25, Wed. 9 pm. POETRY READING. LSW will hold a poetry
reading at Carmody's Pub at Superior Street and 3rd Avenue
East. All are invited to read. For information contact Don

Nov 4, Sat 1 pm. DULUTH POET LAUREATE NOVEMBER EVENT. FREE:
“A Short Oral History of Poetry in Duluth,” in
the Green Room of the Duluth Public Library. A panel presentation
and discussion with Barton Sutter (moderator), Mara Hart,
Cal Benson, and Ellie Schoenfeld. The event will also include
a display of regional books and journals.
Inside-out Class: Due to the recent death of Deborah's brother,
Drew Gordon, Twin Cities pianist and composer, the Inside-out
Class will be rescheduled for next spring.

Tim J Brennan's one act play "Reciting
Emily Dickinson" was chosen for the Oct. 16 "Cold
Cut Reading Series" by Ten Grand Productions in Manhattan.
It will be part of their 7 pm to 9 pm slot at The Actor's
Chapel / 239 W. 49th St, NYC.
Bruce Henricksen is now an Amazon Shorts
writer, and his newest story will be available from Amazon
in Oct.
Mary Ellen Ryall was published in the
Washburn County Register on August 23. The article “Happy
Tonics” focused on her work with the monarch butterfly,
organic gardening, and the March 2007 trip to the Monarch
Butterfly Sanctuary. Ryall presented a nutrition lecture and
garden tour in August, which sparked the article. Ryall’s
article “Spotted knapweed invades Washburn County”
and two of her photographs were also published in the Washburn
County Register in August.

Oct 7, Sat 7:30 pm. Spirit Lake Poetry
Season begins with RYAN VINE, Assistant Professor of English
at the College of St. Scholastica. Vine will read poems from
his debut_chapbook, “Distant Engines,” Backwaters
Press. The collection is the winner of the 2005 Weldon Kees
Award. Somers Lounge, College of St. Scholastica. The season
continues on Nov 18 with Philip Dacey; Feb 17 with a St. David’s
Day Open Reading; March 24 with Women’s Anthology writers;
April 21 with Francine Sterle. Funding is provided by grants
from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, the College of St.
Scholastica, Northern Lights, and the Lee and Rose Warner
Foundation.
Oct 8, Sun., 2 pm. Second Sunday Poets
will host a publication reading for the 2007 Wisconsin Poets'
Calendar at the Drummond Public Library. Poets in the calendar
who are scheduled to read are Ellen Baker (Superior), Jan
Chronister (Maple), Naomi Cochran (Hayward), Ann Penton (Sarona),
and Diana Randolph (Drummond). An open reading precedes the
calendar poets. The event is free and open to the public and
refreshments will be served. The 2007 calendar will be available
for purchase. Sponsors of Second Sunday Poets are CHARAC (Cable/Hayward
Regional Arts Council), the Drummond Public Library, and Wisconsin

NEW EDITING OPPORTUNITY FOR LSW MEMBERS
LSW is initiating a new editing service for members. If you
are interested in becoming an editor for other LSW members,
please let us know. There is a one-time registration fee of
$10.00 to sign up as an editor. Those engaging your services
will agree to pay you $25.00/hour directly. If you are interested
in being listed as an LSW editor, please submit a letter that
1. describes your editing experience and qualifications ;
2. indicates the kinds of writing you are interested in editing
(e.g. poetry, fiction, memoir, non-fiction, children's books,
etc.); 3. gives contact information for those wanting to work

LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS' MENTORING PROGRAM
Could you use a jump-start for your writing- Do you need help
shaping your ideas and strengthening your writing- Do you
have writing experience and the desire to help other writers
develop their writing- LSW offers a unique mentoring program
to its members. We are looking for both writers who would
like to hire a mentor and mentors who would like to work with

Sharon Brown is compiling an anthology
entitled: A Quiet Corner Somewhere: Essays and Poems on Introversion,
a book of essays and poetry by introverted authors. She is
seeking work on a multitude of topics, from interactions at
home and in the workplace, caring for introverted children,
to general life stories from people with introverted personalities.
Essays can be humorous, serious, thought-provoking, etc. For

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP
Member Involvement: We value our membership and encourage
your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for LSW members
is held in the spring. All members are invited to participate.
Financial reports and a summary of the year's activities are
presented to the membership at the annual meeting for review.
The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year. Members are
invited to attend board meetings, review minutes, and look
over financial statements.
Board of Directors: LSW is governed
by an 11-member board. Potential board members are interviewed
by a nomination committee and presented to the board for vote.
In the past, many board members have been chosen from the
group of members who serve on our committees and who volunteer.
