THE GREAT NORTHERN
FESTIVAL OF WORDS
April 19-22 Lake Superior Writers presents The Great Northern
Festival of Words, a celebration of the written and spoken
word, including a presentation by NPR FRESH AIR host TERRY
GROSS on April 19, Wed 7 pm at Mitchell Auditorium, College
of St. Scholastica (tickets 218-723-7000), a free BOOK FAIR
at the Depot on April 22 featuring 40 regional book publishers,
authors, workshops, and readings. At the Book Fair, watch
for the ceremony and announcement naming the first Duluth
Poet Laureate! A Spirit Lake Poetry series reading by Denise
Sweet, the Wisconsin State Poet Laureate will follow at 7:30
pm on April 22 at the College of St. Scholastica. For more

VOLUNTEERS are needed for the events
the Great Northern Festival of Words:
At the Terry Gross Event, April 19, volunteers are needed
to take VIP tickets, assist the CSS catering staff
and to pour wine. To volunteer, contact Anne Moore, 723-2356

At the April 22 Book Fair, volunteers are needed to help exhibitors
set up (Fri night and Sat morning) and to staff
the open readings. To volunteer for the Book Fair, contact

LSW TO PARTICIPATE IN “THE ART OF PEACE”
March 10-11, Fri & Sat, THE ART OF PEACE 2006 at the First
United Methodist Church ("the copper-top church"),
230 E. Skyline in Duluth. The Art of Peace begins with an
art exhibit opening March 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. Events on March
11 begin at 1 p.m. and include performing artists, creative
play, workshops and the art exhibit. The event ends with the
evening's performance beginning at 7 pm. The entire event
is free to the public.

March 16, Thur 11:30 am - LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS’ SQUARE
TABLE meets in the Annex Room (downstairs) At Sara's Table,
1902 E. 8th Street. March topic: “Fitting form to
subject.” This is a great opportunity to connect with
fellow writers, discuss your projects, and talk about

FILM EVENT
May 7, Sun 7 pm - SCREENPLAY WRITER & DIRECTOR BRINGS
“SWEET LAND” to Duluth at the Playground, 11 E.
Superior Street. Lake Superior Writers presents the film SWEET
LAND (2005), a "gorgeous landscape portrait love story"
and a talk by Minnesota’s Ali Selim, the film’s
screenwriter and director After the film, Selim will talk
about script writing and answer questions from the audience.
The film received the Audience Choice Best Feature Award at
the Hamptons International Film Festival. The story is set
in 1920, as the character, Inge, travels from Norway to rural
Minnesota meet the man destined to be her husband. Bureaucracy
and social morality cause major complications.

BTERRY FALSANI, MARA HART and JILL
HINNERS will be published in the anthology DUST & FIRE
2006. Mara Hart’s memoir and Terry Falsani’s and
Jill Hinners’ poems were selected in the annual Dust
& Fire competition, conducted by the English Department
at Bemidji State University. A publication reading and reception
will take place on Friday, March 3rd, at Bemidji State.
MARY ELLEN RYALL was published in the
Washburn County Register in January. Her human-interest article,“Alone
and helpless, a dog calls out for help,” was a true
story about a successful dog rescue by Mary Ellen and Dennis
Stuart, a police officer. In December, Ryall was published
in Senior Focus, a monthly newsletter sponsored by the
Spooner Advocate. The article, “Senior trees bring pleasant
memories,” told of nutritious apple trees growing
at the Minong Senior Center and the elders who enjoy them.Mary
Ellen writes about food safety issues and her on-line
organization Happy Tonics can be viewed at http://www.happytonics.org
CARY GRIFFITH’S book "Lost
in the Wild" is scheduled for release by Borealis Books
this month. She will read and sign her new book at the "Great
Northern Festival of Words" - 11:00am April 22, and will
also hold a book signing at the Duluth Barnes & Noble
3-5 pm on Sunday, April 23.
TIM J BRENNAN’S ten-minute play
"Show Me a Hero" was accepted for production at
Kingwood Community College in Kingwood, Texas, as part of
its Second Annual Evening of Short Plays. Brennan's play will
be shown April 20 ? 23 &
27 ? 29, 2006. Also, Brennan's poem "Vanishing Point"
was accepted at CrossingsatCarnegie in Zumbrota, Minnesota,
as part of its Crossings Poet Artist Collaboration. Brennan
will read his poem at a Poet Artist reception on Saturday,
April 8 at 7pm.
BERYL SINGLETON BISSELL, whose first
book “The Scent of God: A Memoir” is being released
by Counterpoint in April 2006, returned from a pre-publishing
trip to New York City where her publisher Counterpoint held
a media cocktail party in her honor at the Algonquin Hotel.
Counterpoint is the literary imprint of Perseus Press NY.

event is a comprehensive writing conference including guest
speakers, agent selection classes and question and answer

LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS' MENTORING PROGRAM
Could you use a jump-start for your writing? Do you need help
shaping your ideas and strengthening your writing? Do
you have writing experience and the desire to help other writers
develop their writing? LSW offers a unique
mentoring program to its members. We are looking for both
writers who would like to hire a mentor and mentors who
would like to work with writers. Learn more about the mentoring

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: POETRY OUT LOUD
PROJECT - April 8, K-12 students will be
participating in a poetry performance/slam at Coppertop Church.
Volunteers are needed to conduct workshops for
students participating in this project Feb. 27-March 27. Times
are flexible. Workshops are 45 minutes to 2 hours.
Local poets are needed to donate time to work with students,
teaching them about the basics of poetry and then helping
then get started on their poems. Students will participate
in a competition in the classroom, where the teacher will
choose 2 students to go to the April 8 competition. From there,
2 students from each section (K-4, 5-8, and 9-12)
will be chosen to perform at City Hall on April 21. Judges
are also needed for this event. To volunteer or for more

BALLYHOO STORIES is accepting submissions
for its online anthology, the 50 States Project, as well as
its third print issue “Sin and Redemption.” Ballyhoo
Stories is a biannual magazine dedicated to publishing quality
fiction and nonfiction from established and emerging literary
talent both in the print edition and the online-only 50 States
Project. BALLYHOO STORIES is currently accepting story submissions
with the states of Wisconsin, California, Delaware, Indiana,
Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New
Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, or Washington
as either the subject or the setting (work that captures the
similarities and differences of region, geography, and citizenship).
Deadline is March 31, 2006. The deadline for the “Sin
