SECOND
NORTHERN PRINTMAKERS ALLIANCE/LSW COLLABORATION
ANNOUNCED: CALL FOR POETRY SUBMISSIONS
Lake Superior Writers members are invited to participate in
the 2nd collaboration with the Northern Printmakers Alliance.
This time, poems will be written in response to the visual
images. The prints will be posted at the LSW website (lakesuperiorwriters.org)
beginning on June 15. Copies of the prints can also be viewed
at the Northern Prints Gallery, 318 N 14th Ave E, Thurs-Sun,
12-4 pm. Each LSW member may submit up to three poems. The
work will be exhibited at the gallery with an opening reception
& reading on September 28, 2006. Send four (typed) copies
of each poem, with name & contact information on only
1 copy to LSW Collaboration, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132,
Duluth MN 55811. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS AUGUST 1, 2006.

NEW LSW WRITING GROUP FORMING - JUNE
14, AT SARA’S TABLE, NOON.
If you’re interested in joining a newly forming fiction
and nonfiction writing group, please meet with us for an organizational
luncheon meeting at Sara’s Table, 1902 E. 8th St., Duluth
on Wednesday, June 14 at noon. Check at the front desk to
pick up a menu and to find out our location in the restaurant.

LSW WRITERS’ SQUARE TABLE
June 15, Thur 11:30 am - LSW SQUARE TABLE meets on the main
floor private dining room at Sara's Table, 1902 E. 8th Street
(the room to the left as you enter). June topic: “Setting:
Evoking a vivid sense of time and place.” Are great
books languishing on your bookshelves- We’re starting
a monthly book exchange at our Square Table meetings- if you’ve
finished reading a good book and either wish to give it away
or trade it for something new, bring it along to the meeting.
Please limit the books you bring to share to no more than

TIM J BRENNAN’S poem "Vanishing
Point" is one of mnartists.org featured poems for "What
Light," a continuing three-month look at Minnesota poets,
a series co-sponsored by Magers and Quinn bookstores. Also,
three of Tim J Brennan's one act plays were accepted for summer
production: "Show Me a Hero" at Heartland Theater
in Bloomington, IL (June); "Reciting Emily Dickinson"
at Cedar Lane Stage in Bethesda, MA (July); and "About
Yesterday" at Rochester Repertory Theatre in Rochester,
MN (July). DONN DASS’S
new book of poetry "Promises Vague yet Certain"
will be available at Northern Prints Gallery during their
"Books In Print" exhibition. He will read selections
at the exhibit opening on June 22 from 5 until 8 PM. The book
will include twenty of his selected poems with artwork by
Cecelia Lieder, and printed by Tight Squeak Press of Duluth.
Others displaying their books will be Becky Prange, Jon Hinkle,
Todd White, Jauneth Skinner and Betsey Bowen. The exhibit
will run until August 5th. Donn's project was made possible
in part by an ARAC grant.
JEANNIE EDDY’S short story “Never
Again” will be published in Apollo’s Lyre. To

and select the July 2006 issue.
CARY GRIFFITH will be interviewed about
his new nonfiction book "Lost in the Wild" on June
5 during the "Showcase Minnesota" program on KARE
11 TV. He also will be signing the book on June 10 at Barnes
& Noble in Burnsville, MN, and giving a reading and discussion
on June 15 at Barnes & Noble in Eden Prairie, MN
MICKEY McGILLIGAN has had her poem
“Your Personal Authorization to Relax” accepted
for publication in the June 2006 issue of Main Channel Voices:
A Dam Fine Literary Magazine, which is published out of Winona,
MN.
TRACY NELSON MAURER’S book “John
Deere” will be released on June 4, 2-4 pm in Hugo, MN
at the Hugo Animal Farm.
MARY ELLEN RYALL was published in the
UK, Spring 2006 issue of The Butterfly Observer, Cornwall
Butterfly Conservation Newsletter. Her article, "Europe's
Butterflies Are Declining" was featured and highlighted
the decline of the Marsh Fritillary in the Cornwall Moors.
FRANCINE STERLE Francine Sterle will participate in two readings
at Avol’s Books in Madison in June: June 15 - “Ekphrastic
Feast” and June 17 - “Verbal Events Reading: A
Tribute to William Stafford.”

NEW EDITING OPPORTUNITY FOR LSW MEMBERS
LSW is initiating a new editing service for members. If you
are interested in becoming an editor for other LSW members,
please let us know. There is a one-time registration fee of
$10.00 to sign up as an editor. Those engaging your services
will agree to pay you $25.00/hour directly. If you are interested
in being listed as an LSW editor, please submit a letter that
1. describes your editing experience and qualifications ;
2. indicates the kinds of writing you are interested in editing
(e.g. poetry, fiction, memoir, non-fiction, children's books,
etc.); 3. gives contact information for those wanting to work

LAKE SUPERIOR WRITERS' MENTORING PROGRAM
Could you use a jump-start for your writing- Do you need help
shaping your ideas and strengthening your writing- Do you

develop their writing- LSW offers a unique mentoring program
to its members. We are looking for both writers who would
like to hire a mentor and mentors who would like to work with

Community Connections, a 13-year old
quarterly journal about the environment, policy and quality
of life, is looking for stories, essays, and poetry about
the earth. Cover story ($50 payment) or essays are requested

18TH ANNUAL NORTHEASTERN MN BOOK AWARDS ANNOUNCED
“Salemla: Architect,” a book featuring the architecture
of David Salmela, won the 2005 Northeastern Minnesota Book
Award (NEMBA) for Nonfiction, Scholarship, and Art. A children’s
book, “Zoe's Good-bye,” by Two Harbors veterinarian
Mary Schlangen won in the category of Fiction, Poetry, and
Drama. Chosen for honorable mention in the Nonfiction category
was a biography of Minnesota’s longest-serving governor,
Rudy Perpich. “Rudy! The People’s Governor,”
was written by Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter Betty Wilson.
William Kent Krueger’s “Mercy Falls” was
recognized with an honorable mention in the NEMBA category
for Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. This book continues Krueger’s
Cork O’Connor mystery series, featuring a sheriff whose
jurisdiction covers a beautiful and sometimes
dangerous territory--the northern woods of Minnesota. Krueger
previously won a NEMBA honorable mention for his book Iron
Lake.

ABOUT THE LSW BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND
THE LSW MEMBERSHIP
Member Involvement: We value our membership and encourage
your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for LSW members
is held in the spring. All members are invited to participate.
Financial reports and a summary of the year's activities are
presented to the membership at the annual meeting for review.
The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year. Members are
invited to attend board meetings, review minutes, and look
over financial statements.
Board of Directors: LSW is governed
by an 11-member board. Potential board members are interviewed
by a nomination committee and presented to the board for vote.
In the past, many board members have been chosen from the
group of members who serve on our committees and who volunteer.
