SECOND NORTHERN PRINTMAKERS ALLIANCE/LSW
COLLABORATION
ANNOUNCED: CALL FOR POETRY SUBMISSIONS
Lake Superior Writers members are invited to participate in
the 2nd collaboration with the Northern Printmakers Alliance.
This time, poems will be written in response to the visual
images. The prints will be posted at the LSW website (lakesuperiorwriters.org/lswcontest.html).
Copies of the prints can also be viewed at the Northern Prints
Gallery, 318 N 14th Ave E, Thurs-Sun, 12-4 pm. Each LSW member
may submit up to three poems. The work will be exhibited at
the gallery with an opening reception & reading on September
28, 2006. Send four (typed) copies of each poem, with name
& contact information on only 1 copy to LSW Collaboration,
1301 Rice Lake Road, Suite 132, Duluth MN 55811. SUBMISSIONS
MUST BE RECEIVED BY AUGUST 1, 2006.

POET LAUREATE EVENTS COMING THIS FALL
The Inaugural Reading for the Duluth Poet Laureate will be
held at 7:30 p.m. on Sat. Oct 21 in the Weber Music Hall.
On Sat. Nov 4, an event entitled, "A Short History of
Poetry in Duluth," will be held at the Green Room of
the Duluth Public Library. Watch future issues of the LSW

JAN CHRONISTER has two poems in the
new Outrider Press anthology “Vacations.” She
also has a poem in the “2007 Wisconsin Poets Calendar”
and will read at the 14th Annual Olbrich Garden reading in
Madison on July 16.

poems selected for the 2007 Wisconsin Poets’ Calendar,
the 2006 Haiku Society of America’s Annual Member Anthology,
& the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets’ Summer ’06
Museletter. She has just completed an online course called
Pleasures of Poetry through Ed2Go.com and is looking forward
to studying in person with the past and present Wisconsin
Poet Laureates at Rhinelander’s School of the Arts in
late July.
MARY ELLEN RYALL’s article "Wildlife
and Garden Club" was published in the June issue of Senior
Focus. Ryall was also published in a June issue of The Spooner
Advocate for an article entitled "Tai chi to be shown."

Now through August 5 - BOOKS IN PRINT: A CELEBRATION OF
PRINTS IN THE BOOK ARTS, Northern Prints Gallery. Printmakers
have been involved in the making and illustrating of books
for centuries. There is a natural affinity between the printed
page and the printed image that intrigues them. Our regional
printmakers are no exception. In this exhibit, Northern Printmakers
Alliance artists present the books they have created, from
small one-of-kind handmade books to highly acclaimed trade
editions. Original prints from the books are also available.
The exhibit introduces two new books, "Promises Vague
yet Certain" by Donald Dass, which was hand printed by
Jon Hinkel with linocuts by Cecilia Lieder, and "Spring
Rain" a collection of children's songs. NORTHERN PRINTS

group - “Writers Read” are meeting on the first
Thursday of the month at the Front Porch in Ely, and all writers
are welcome. On August 3rd they will host guest writer and
storyteller Kevin Strauss, author of 3 books published this
past year, including “Tales with Tails.” Writers
are encouraged to bring some of their own work to share, but
if they are bashful the group invites them to just listen.
The writing topic for July is 'keys.' However, writing on

Lewis presents “Gitchi Gumee” at the SS Meteor

NEW EDITING OPPORTUNITY FOR LSW MEMBERS
LSW is initiating a new editing service for members. If you
are interested in becoming an editor for other LSW members,
please let us know. There is a one-time registration fee of
$10.00 to sign up as an editor. Those engaging your services
will agree to pay you $25.00/hour directly. If you are interested
in being listed as an LSW editor, please submit a letter that
1. describes your editing experience and qualifications ;
2. indicates the kinds of writing you are interested in editing
(e.g. poetry, fiction, memoir, non-fiction, children's books,

Community Connections, a 13-year old
quarterly journal about the environment, policy and quality
of life, is looking for stories, essays, and poetry about
the earth. Cover story ($50 payment) or essays are requested

NEBRASKA WRITING RESIDENCY PROGRAM:
The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts offers an average
of 38 2, 4, 6 or 8 week long residencies per year to writers,
visual artists and composers worldwide. The newly renovated
Center, inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright,
is located in the historic Missouri River town of Nebraska
City. Each apartment has a balcony and shares the use of three
private landscaped courtyards. Residents are provided with
free housing and studio space, internet access and a $100/week
stipend. Deadlines are March 1 for the following July - December
and September 1 for the following January - June. Visit the

ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES: Local writers
may be interested to know that Gather.com has
a number of "groups" where people may post stories
and poems and receive comments from other group members. MPR
also has a Gather site called "Minnesota Readers,"
which is a forum for book discussion. Also, Amazon now gives
writers a free website that allows writers to communicate
directly with a network of readers--readers can subscribe
to postings from their favorite authors. Just type "Amazon
connect" on your browser.
GRANT OPPORTUNITIES: ROUND II - Mizna Mini-Regranting Program.
Postmark deadline:
August 15, 2006. $1000 to be awarded to artists who identify
as Arab, Muslim, Berber, Somali or Iranian to facilitate and
support their creative, original artistic work. This program
is designed to support artists who work in the following mediums:
visual art, music, performance art, theater, dance, creative
writing, storytelling, film, or traditional folk arts and
who are able to present their final project with Mizna in
the seven county metropolitan Twin Cities area, and attend
periodic meetings during the granting cycle. Eight artists
will be selected, and each will receive a grant of one thousand
dollars to develop a new piece of work to present with Mizna
in early 2007. New artists are encouraged to apply. Mizna

MINNESOTA CRIME ANTHOLOGY ANNOUNCED: Following the success
of its first publishing venture, "Silence of the Loons,"
The Minnesota Crime Wave has announced a sequel. The new volume,
to be titled "Resort to Murder," is planned for
release in late summer, 2007. The anthology will be published
by Nodin Press of Minneapolis, known for its fine carefully
designed books in many fields. Eligible authors must have
been professionally published in any genre and must be living
in Minnesota. Stories must be set at a real Minnesota resort,
although the actual name of the resort may not be used. Authors
must tell the Crime Wave which Minnesota resort they intend
to use as their setting to avoid duplications. All stories
must contain at least one murder and will range from 1,000
to 7,500 words in length. Contracts and payment of $100 will
be issued upon acceptance of each story. Spokesperson Ellen
Hart said, "This is a great opportunity for authors in
other genres who want to try crime fiction.” “We'll
be looking for strong motivation, suspense and interesting
characters," commented William Kent Krueger. "And
don't forget pace and good description," added Carl Brookins.
The crime wave trio, mystery authors all, has pledged their
usual strong efforts to promote the anthology once it is released.
The Minnesota Crime Wave has become known for its compelling
costumed presentations to audiences at bookstores, libraries

CALL FOR INSPIRING TRUE STORIES - A
Cup of Comfort is a popular anthology (book) series featuring
inspiring true stories about the extraordinary experiences
of people. They are currently seeking submissions for three
new volumes: A Cup of Comfort for Writers (submission deadline:
July 31); A Cup of Comfort for Dog Lovers (submission deadline:
August 31); and A Cup of Comfort for Single Mothers (submission

Member Involvement: We value our membership and encourage
your involvement in LSW. An annual meeting for LSW members
is held in the spring. All members are invited to participate.
Financial reports and a summary of the year's activities are
presented to the membership at the annual meeting for review.
The LSW board meets monthly throughout the year. Members are
invited to attend board meetings, review minutes, and look
over financial statements.
Board of Directors: LSW is governed
by an 11-member board. Potential board members are interviewed
by a nomination committee and presented to the board for vote.
In the past, many board members have been chosen from the
group of members who serve on our committees and who volunteer.
