Nov 10, Thur, 7:30 pm - Travel
and Study Grant Program.
Lake Superior Writers is sponsoring a Jerome Foundation Travel
and Study Grant Program, Workshop in Literature at 7:30 p.m.
on Thursday, November 10 in the Lake Superior Writers Meeting
Room, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Duluth. (next to Sylvan Learning
Center). Cindy Gehrig from the Jerome Foundation will facilitate
the workshop. Refreshments will be served. The Travel and
Study Grant Program awards grants each year to emerging creative
artists (writers of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction,
and spoken word; film and video artists; and choreographers).
The deadline for proposals in literature, film/video and dance
is Jan. 13, 2006. Application Guidelines are available now.
Funds support periods of travel for the purpose of study,
exploration, and growth. For more information contact the

N ov 15, Tue 7 pm - "New London Writers,"
a Lake Superior Writers' group, will read from their poetry
and prose works at the Playground, 11 East Superior Street
(Tech Village), in Duluth. The event is free and refreshments
will be served. The "New London Writers" group has
been meeting since 2002 and includes Marty Bigalk, Don Dass,
Beth Domholdt, Jeanne Eddy, Kari Hedin, Jill Hinners, and
Cheryl Reitan, several of whom have published poetry and prose
in literary magazines. Donald Doss recently received an ARAC
grant to publish a book of his poetry. Please join us for

DONALD DASS received a $1,000 McKnight/ARAC
Career Development Grant to assist with the publication of
a chapbook of his poetry by a local press. He plans to use
the chapbook for distribution to solicit readings and additional
publication opportunities.
JEANNIE EDDY’S short story “Never
Again” was published in the current issue of The Circle
Magazine. It can be seen online at www.circlemagazine.com.
Her short story has also
been accepted for publication in the November 2005 issue of
Long Story Short. It will be posted after November 7 at www.longstoryshort.us.
Jeannie has a second short story forthcoming in early 2006
in Dream Fantasy International Magazine.
BRUCE HENRICKSEN’S collection
of short stories “Tickets to a Lonely Town” was
cited in the current Writer's Chronicle as finalist for the
Grace Paley Prize. His poem "Solitude" appears in
a new anthology, Chance of a Ghost: An Anthology of Contemporary
Ghost Poems (Helicon Nine
Editions).
TRACEY NELSON MAURER is the author
of six books about cheerleading in the recently released nonfiction
children's series "Jump & Shout!" from Rourke
Publishing of Vero Beach, Florida. These books are sold to
schools and libraries.
JEFF RENNICKE’S new book “Jewels
on the Water: Lake Superior's Apostle Islands” was released
on October 3rd. The 128-page hardcover book contains five
essays by Jeff Rennicke and more than 190 photographs, many
by Minneapolis-based photographer Layne Kennedy. The book
is the first hardcover, full-color look at the history and
beauty of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Published
by Friends of the Apostle Islands, the book can be ordered

JEANNE VAN SLYKE EVANS recently facilitated
a six-session writing workshop "Recipe Card Memories"
with the Senior Citizen Center of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Funded by a grant from the Mississippi Arts Council, th eworkshop
was part of a Heritage Cookbook project for the "Hospitality
City of the South." The cookbook will also feature pastel
and pen and ink drawings, 600 recipes, and the collected stories
written in her workshop.
CONNIE WANEK received an Arrowhead
Regional Arts Council Fellowship Award. Wanek's poetry is
in the lyric tradition with its attention to sound and natural
imagery. Wanek has had work published in The Atlantic Monthly,
Poetry, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Texas Observer,
Negative Capability and several other periodicals. She has
published two books: “Bonfire,” published by Two
Rivers Press and a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award and
the Northeastern
Minnesota Book Award; and “Hartley Field” published
by Holy Cow! Press, also a finalist for the Northeastern Minnesota
Book Award.

- POET JIM JOHNSON. Jim Johnson taught in the Duluth Public
Schools from 1973 until his retirement last year, has taught
courses in composition for teachers in the Duluth schools'
inservice program and at the University of Minnesota Duluth,
and he also taught in the Poets-in-the-Schools Program. Jim's
first two books of poetry, “Finns In Minnesota Midwinter”
(1986) and “A Field Guide To Blueberries” (1992)
were published by North Star Press. “Wolves,”
which won the 1991 Minnesota Voices Contest, was published
by New Rivers Press. “Dovetailed Corners” (1996)
in collaboration with photographer Marlene Wisuri, was published
by Holy! Cow Press. In addition, Jim's poetry has appeared
in numerous literary magazines.

LAST CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: 18th ANNUAL MINNESOTA BOOK AWARDS
? DEADLINE NOV. 15, 2005. The Minnesota Humanities
Commission (MHC) is now accepting submissions for the
Minnesota Book Awards, which recognize, honor, and celebrate
Minnesota literature. Awards will be given in thirteen
categories: Anthology & Collection; Autobiography, Memoir,
&
Creative Nonfiction; Children's Fiction & Poetry; Children's
Picture Book; Children's & Young Adult Nonfiction; Fine
Press; General Nonfiction; History & Biography; Novel
&
Short Story; Poetry; Popular Fiction; Science & Nature;
and
Young Adult Fiction & Poetry.
To be considered, books must be copyrighted in 2005.
Minnesota residents - and individuals whose personal
history, identity, or literary work reflects a strong
Minnesota influence - are eligible. Any individual or
organization may make a Minnesota Book Award submission.
Full guidelines and the online entry form are available at
http://www.minnesotahumanities.org. Book submissions are due
by November 15, 2005.
Award recipients will be announced at the Minnesota Book
Awards gala at The Woman's Club of Minneapolis on April 29,
2006.
ARAC INDIVIDUAL ARTIST CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANT - The
Arrowhead Regional Arts Council announces opportunities for
area writers. The McKnight/ARAC Individual Artist Career
Development Grant, which offer non-matching funding to
assist visual, literary and performing artists to take part
in impending, concrete, short-term career opportunities that
will advance their work or careers. Artists may request up
to $1,000 per application. Guidelines and application forms
