LSW KUDOS News about LSW Members

The winners of the 17th annual Minnesota Book Awards included Lake Superior Writers members: LISE LUNGE-LARSEN, who won the award in the category Children's and Young Adult Nonfiction for the book, The Hidden Folk: Stories of Fairies, Dwarves, Selkies, and Other Secret Beings, illustrated by BETH KROMMES (Houghton Mifflin). LOUIS JENKINS won the award in the category
Fine Press for the book, Distance from the Sun: Thirty Prose Poems from Thirty Years, illustrated by CHANDLER O'LEARY, design and binding by JEFF RATHERMEL and JANA PULLMAN, printing by SARA LANGWORTHY (Minnesota Center for Book Arts). Duluth's Holy Cow Press won
the award in the category Poetry for the book, Naming the Stars, by JOYCE SUTPHEN.

TIM J. BRENNAN’S poem “dressed rehearsals” was selected by Yuko Taniguchi for Minnesota Artists Poem of the Week poetry contest. Winning poems will appear on website (www.mnartists.org) starting the first week in May and running into June.

May 18, Wed, 6-9 pm - 17th ANNUAL NORTHEASTERN MINNESOTA BOOK AWARDS
Celebration, UMD Library. SAM COOK, well-known local author and newspaper columnist, will be the featured speaker. The event includes a book fair, Sam Cook’s talk, the awards presentation, and the traditional reception complete with free pie. Presented each year by the UMD Library and Friends of the Duluth Public Library, NEMBA recognizes books written about northeastern Minnesota that substantially represent its history, culture, heritage, or lifestyle. Thirty books have been nominated this year, vying for prizes in two categories: (1) Fiction, Poetry, Drama and (2) Nonfiction, Art, Scholarship. Nominated titles had to have been released in the year 2004. The winners will be announced the evening of the event. For more information call 726-8130.

DULUTH WRITERS’ WORKSHOP at University of Minnesota Duluth, August 11-17, 2005. Creative writing sessions in poetry, fiction, and the memoir and personal essay. Workshop participants will work with TED KOOSER, the U.S. Poet Laureate and acclaimed Nebraska poet, author of “Delights and Shadows” and “Weather Central”; PATRICIA WEAVER FRANCISCO, author of “Telling: A Memoir of Rape and Recovery,” “Cold Feet,” and “Village Without Mirrors;” and ROBERT OLEN BUTLER, author of ten novels and three volumes of short stories, including “A Good Scent From a Strange Mountain,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The Workshop Director is Joseph Maiolo, professor of English at UMD and a fiction writer whose work has been published in The Sewanee Review, Ploughshares, Shenandoah, and other magazines.
