Duluth's library. Thirty books, a record number, were nominated
for the awards given to books published in 2004 that "capture
the spirit of northeastern Minnesota."
The winner in Nonfiction, Art and Scholarship is "Minnesota's

Seas: An Illustrated History of the Port of Duluth-Superior,"
written by BILL BECK and C. PATRICK LABADIE and published
by Afton Historical Society Press. The winner in Fiction,
Poetry and Drama was "Ojibwe Tales: Stories of the Ojibwe
People," written by ART PRZYBILLA with the aid of the
late RANDY COUNCILLOR, who was chief of the Northwest Bay
First Nation on Rainy Lake. The two worked together to revive
stories that embody traditional Ojibwe values and beliefs
for the book published by Lake States Interpretive Association.
"Sea Smoke: Prose Poems" by LOUIS JENKINS of Duluth
and published by Holy Cow! Press of Duluth earned an honorable
mention. The awards are presented by UMD Library and Friends
