TIM J BRENNAN’S ten minute play
"My Name is Lisa" was accepted for production at
Stormy Weather Players 2005 New Plays Festival in August.
Brennan's play will be produced August 17 through August 20
on the Cornwall
on Hudson stage in upstate New York.
MARY ELLEN RYALL was published in The
Daily Telegram in June. Her essay “Satisfaction Guaranteed”
appeared in the Senior Class column. She was also published
in the Washburn County Register. The story “Monarch
may be in trouble” may be viewed on her website at http://www.happytonics.org//

Aug 12, Friday, 7 pm, UMD Kirby Student
Center Rafters - Robert Olen Butler Reading. Part of the Duluth
Writers' Workshop: In Praise of the Book. Robert Olen Butler
has published ten novels and three volumes of short stories,
one of which, A Good Scent from a Strange Mountain,
won the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. His latest book of
stories, Had a Good Time, is based on his collection
of antique picture post cards. His short fiction has appeared
in such publications as The New Yorker, Esquire, The Atlantic
Monthly, Harper’s, Zoetrope, GQ, The Paris Review, Ploughshares,
McSweeney’s and Glimmer Train. They have
also been chosen for inclusion in four annual editions of
The Best American Short Stories, eight annual editions
of New Stories from the South, and numerous college
literature textbooks. His book of prose poems, Severance,
debuts with Rivages in France in April 2005, to coincide with
a ballet based upon it that will be performed in Lyon. Also
appearing in 2005 is his book of lectures on the creative
process, From Where You Dream. Free.

Hall - Ted Kooser Reading. Part of the Duluth Writers' Workshop:
In Praise of the Book. Ted Kooser is one of Nebraska’s
most highly regarded poets and the country’s newest
Poet Laureate. A professor of English at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, he is the author of eleven full-length collections
of poetry, including Delights and Shadows (Copper Canyon Press,
2004) and Weather Central (University of Pittsburgh Press,
1994). Over the years his works have appeared in many periodicals
including The Atlantic Monthly, The New Yorker, Poetry, The
Hudson Review, The Nation, The American Poetry Review, The
Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, and Antioch Review. Koosers’
poems are included in textbooks and anthologies used in both
secondary schools and college classrooms across the country.
He has received two NEA fellowships in poetry, the Pushcart
Prize, the Stanley Kunitz Prize, The James Boatwright Prize,
and a Merit Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. Free.

Center Rafters - Patricia Weaver Francisco. Part of the Duluth
Writers' Workshop: In Praise of the Book. Patricia Weaver
Francisco is the author of TELLING: A Memoir of Rape and Recovery
(HarperCollins, 1999, 2000), for which she was awarded a Minnesota
Book Award, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship,
and a Loft-McKnight Award of Distinction. Francisco has also
published a play (Lunacy, Dramatic Publishing Company), a
novel (Cold Feet, Simon & Schuster, 1988) and a book of
essays (Village Without Mirrors, Milkweed Editions, 1989).
She teaches in the MFA program in creative writing at Hamline
University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Since the publication of
TELLING she has been active in speaking to colleges, high
schools, and service providers on the subject of sexual violence
and in conducting workshops on writing the memoir of crisis.

Center Rafters - Joseph Maiolo. Part of the Duluth Writers'
Workshop: In Praise of the Book. UMD professor Joseph Maiolo's
short stories have been published in The Sewanee Review,
Ploughshares, and Shenandoah. Several of his
stories and a novella have won national awards, including
citation in The Best American Short Stories, a Pushcart
Prize, three PEN/Syndicated Fiction Awards, and two National
Endowment for the Arts Literary Fellowships. Maiolo's work
has also received a Bush Artist Fellowship and a Loft-McKnight
Award of Distinction in Fiction. "The Girl and the Serpent,"
an excerpt from his memoir in progress, was published in 2001
by Beacon Press in Resurrecting Grace: Remembering Catholic
Childhoods. Free.

poet, ARAC and Loft McKnight Award winner, will be teaching
a Wednesday night INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: POETRY. (English
1140). Students will learn about the elements of poetry: voice,
word choice, stanza and line breaks, metrics, forms, and more
and students will read classic and contemporary poetry. The
