The event will include brief readings by noted local poets such as ELLIE SCHOENFELD, PAUL LUNDGREN AND BARTON SUTTER, but anyone, published or not, is welcome to participate. The first half of the evening is devoted to original work, the second half to favorite poems by other authors. Readers should limit themselves to three minutes to give equal time to everyone. "No hogging the microphone," said board member Barton Sutter. "We want to hear a wide range of poems and keep things moving." Because the reading takes place so close to Valentine's Day and falls on Lincoln's birthday, love poems and poems about presidents would be especially welcome. The brainchild of Minnesota Book Award winner Louis Jenkins, the one-night poetry festival is designed to celebrate the variety of voices in the Northland and kiss the worst of winter goodbye. The event has proven popular over the years, drawing readers and audience members from as far away as the Twin Cities and Grand Marais. Readers are urged to sign up early. The reading is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. March 19, Sat 10 am - 3 pm. POETRY FROM THE SENSES BY KATE KYSAR. A one-day
workshop at the Loft Literary Center. This workshop will focus on a problem in the poems of many beginning writers: leaping into the abstract world of feelings and ideas, often leaving the reader far behind. We’ll work with grounding your poetry by using sensory images to create a bridge for the reader between the concrete and abstract. We will read master poems as examples to lead us into a series of exercises focusing on the senses we so often neglect-sound, smell, touch, and taste. We will share (but not critique) our creations. At the end of the day, participants will leave with several new poems started. Bring a bag lunch. http://wwww.loft.org/classes.htm
