- 8:30 pm - WRITING CLASS - INSIDE-OUT: A WRITING CLASS FOR
THOSE WHO HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE will be offered from
in the Marshall School Annex, 1301 Rice Lake Road, facilitated
by Deborah Cooper, Poet & Chaplain. Finding words for
our grief & giving voice to it can be an avenue for healing,
a way of recovering our balance & deepening our understanding.
The act of writing engages us in a process of expressing our
heart’s truth, a process that can offer insight, light
& resolution. Deborah Cooper is a Certified Chaplain.
She has served in a variety of settings in the Twin Ports
community over the last twenty years. She is the author of
two small collections of poetry. The cost is $60 for members
of Lake Superior Writers and $75 for non-members. For info

WRITERS’ SQUARE TABLE, Chester Creek Cafe downstairs.
We meet the third Thursday of each month to discuss books,
writing, and literary matters. April's topic: Tone in Writing.
We will not critique individual manuscripts. Please place
your order as you enter, and pick up water, silverware and
a napkin. Your lunch order will be brought downstairs to you.
This is an open group open to all LSW members, friends, and
the Duluth literary community. Pass the word. Please call

LSW LITERARY GARAGE SALE and LSW ANNUAL MEETING.
Sale & fun events are planned in the Marshall
School annex meeting room. Shop for chairs, lamps, shelves,
and books, books, books! LSW members will write "Dear
John" and "Dear Joan" letters, difficult letters,
love poems, etc. on the spot for a small fee. Members receive
one free book with any purchase. LSW’s Annual Meeting
follows at 3:30 p.m. Donations are needed. Drop off your books
at the LSW Meeting Room from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday,
April 16 and 23, 5 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, and 1
- 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 28. For additional drop times

KUDOS News about LSW Members
MARY ELLEN RYALL was published in the
April 2005 issue of Senior Focus. Her article “Senior
Baker Extraordinaire” and photograph appeared in the
monthly newsletter. The Spooner Advocate sponsors
Senior Focus and features the Washburn County Unit on Aging
and other Washburn County Agencies.
The anthology, Charlotte's Table
is one of the finalists in its category for a Minnesota Book
Award. The awards will be presented in the evening on April
16 at the Minneapolis Woman's Club. RICHARD FOURNIER, a member
of LSW, is both a contributor to the book as well as one of
the editors. The book contains a variety of material, fiction,
poetry and memoir from nine writers, all members of the 42nd
Street Irregulars writing group who established their own
publishing company, Piecemeal Publications, to put out the
book.
Lake Superior Writers member KATE KYSAR
was recently awarded a residency at the Anderson Center for
Interdisciplinary Studies to work on her second book-length
manuscript of poetry, and her poem "Idaho Potatoes"
will be included in Garrison Keillor's second anthology of
Good Poems which will be published by Viking Penguin
this summer.
INGRID HILL, who won first runner-up
in fiction in the Lake Superior Writers Contest in 2000 with
an excerpt, "Marjatta," from a novel in progress,
published the novel in June 2004. Ursula, Under was
published
by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill. In October, the novel won
the Great Lakes Book Award. The novel was sold to Jonathan
Cape (Random House UK) and released on January 6 in London,
UK. It will be released in a huge paperback printing, with
book club questions and an author interview, by Penguin, in
July 2005. Hill’s visit to Duluth for the awards ceremony
produced another story, "Gipsy Fisher's Rest," set
in Duluth, and was published in the current issue of Image
magazine.

POETRY SERIES - Ilze Mueller will read from Gate,
her new collection of poems, at the College of Saint Scholastica,
Somers Lounge. Mueller emigrated from Latvia during World
War II, lived on four continents, and has made her home in
Minnesota for the past 30 years. Her poetry reflects her range
of language, her experiences with different cultures, and
her interest in travel. Mueller taught for many years at Macalester
College and has also worked as a translator, interpreter,
and proofreader. Mueller's poems have appeared in magazines
and anthologies such as Calyx, Water-Stone, and Looking
for Home: Women Writing About Exile. Her literary translations
include Christa Reinig's Idleness is the Root of All Love
from German and Vizma Belsevica's poems from Latvian. Complementary
music from the Baltic Sea region will be provided by Barb
Hanka. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free and
open to the public. A booksigning will follow the reading.

REFLECTIONS, a journal/forum for artists,
dedicated to artists worldwide announces a call for 2-D and
literary artists for the spring issue. Postmark deadline:
April 2, 2005. THEME: reflection; creation of an image using
a mirrored object, an image bounced back from a reflective
surface. Artists can interpret this theme loosely, abstractly,
or realistically. The only caveat is that submissions can

DULUTH WRITERS’ WORKSHOP at University
of Minnesota Duluth, August 11-17, 2005. Creative writing
sessions in poetry, fiction, and the memoir and personal essay.
Workshop participants will work with TED KOOSER, the U.S.
Poet Laureate and acclaimed Nebraska poet, author of “Delights
and Shadows” and “Weather Central”; PATRICIA
WEAVER FRANCISCO, author of “Telling: A Memoir of Rape
and Recovery,” “Cold Feet,” and “Village
Without Mirrors;” and ROBERT OLEN BUTLER, author of
ten novels and three volumes of short stories, including “A
Good Scent From a Strange Mountain,” which won the Pulitzer
Prize for Fiction. The Workshop Director is Joseph Maiolo,
professor of English at UMD and a fiction writer whose work
has been published in The Sewanee Review, Ploughshares, Shenandoah,

From MNARTISTS.ORG - In celebration
of poetry, and in the desire to make it an integral part of
mnartists.org, we are running a contest to select 6 poems
to feature as "poem of the week" in April and May.
Deadline is Friday, March 25; winners will be announced by
April 11; and one poem will be posted each week after this
through May. Poems will be featured on the front page of mnartists.org;
plans are afoot for further publication and performance of
the featured poems. We are thinking of this as a pilot project,
and hope that we can continue it beyond this initial version.

Each submission should consist of the following items: --Your
name, address, and contact information --No more than 5 poems
(total page limit of submissions, 20 pp.) --A brief biographical
piece that can also act as a writer's statement Submissions

by a panel of 3 readers. This panel will be composed of a
mix of a publishing professional, a writer, and a reader of
poetry.
