(co-sponsored by UMD-Library). The fifth annual Lake Superior
Writers writing competition
called for submissions of poetry and prose on the theme "In the

and the Northern Printmakers Alliance have participated in a collaborative

FACILITATING A WRITING GROUP: A GATHERING FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED
FACILITATORS at the Lake Superior Writers meeting room Marshall School Annex,
1301 Rice Lake Road, Duluth. Lake Superior Writers wants to support
our genre-based writing groups and we are open to starting new
ones
so we are inviting you to a meeting of new and seasoned facilitators.
LSW can suggest guidelines to aid you in structuring meetings
and current facilitators will share their experiences. Experience
in facilitating isnt
necessary, just come with a willingness to learn. Some genre group
possibilities are Poetry, Writing for Children, Fiction, Creative
Non-Fiction, Memoir, Script Writing or Essay. Writing groups offer
a time to share work with others, offer supportive feedback, and
learn more about the writing process. Cheryl Reitan and others
from the LSW Board will host the meeting. Refreshments will be

LSW KUDOS
LSW member MARK MAIRE of Duluth has two poems in the current issue
of Phantasmagoria. Phantasmagoria is a publication of the English Department at Century College
in White Bear Lake, is in its fourth year of existence, and is
indexed in the American Humanities Index.
MARA HART has a contract for THE BOOK OF THE KALEMS with Hippocampus
Press, NYC.
In August, ANN TREACY sold a second story to Highlights for Children.
BRUCE HENRICKSENS story "Pablo and I" is anthologized in Mota 4: Integrity, (Triple Tree Publishing), which may be ordered through local
bookstores and is available at Amazon.com. His story "Changes"
is scheduled to appear in RE:AL in August.
On Oct 8 at 7 pm, CHERYL REITAN will read from her (unpublished)
novel Fosters Ridge at Amazon Books, 4432 Chicago Ave, Minneapolis.
KATE KYSAR will read on Saturday, September 11th, as part of a
reading and musical event sponsored by Minnesota Poets Against
War to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, with Robert Bly, Kate
Kysar, Rich Broderick, Diane
Jarvi/Javernpa and Thomas R. Smith. 7:00 p.m., St. Joan of Arc
Catholic Church, 4537 3rd Avenue South, Minneapolis. Free admission,
but donations to Friends for a Non-Violent World are welcome.
She will also read on
Friday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m. with fellow Banfill-Locke Center
for the Arts writing instructors Michael Fedo, Terri Ford, Jude
Nutter, and Juliet Patterson. They will read their work and talk
about their upcoming classes.

JAN CHRONISTER has a poem included in Things That Go Bump in the Night, an anthology published by Outrider Press and the Tall Grass

Call Poems, Triad Contest Awards, a readings by Ellie Schoenfeld,

Bush Foundation, Artist Fellowships. Up to 15 Grants of $44,000
each are given biennially to poets, fiction writers, and creative
nonfiction writers by the Bush Foundation. Writers living in Minnesota,
North Dakota, South Dakota, and northwestern Wisconsin who are
25 years of age or older and are not enrolled in a degree-granting
program are eligible. Fellows are expected to devote 12 to 24
months to their proposed project. Submit up to 15 pages of poetry

New Rivers Press, MVP Competition. Three prizes of $1,000 each
and a standard royalty contract are given annually for unpublished
book-length manuscripts by emerging writers. The winning works
will be published by New Rivers Press and distributed nationally

or collection of stories by a U.S. writer; the other two will
be awarded for works of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction
by writers who reside in Minnesota or New York City. Submit a
