FACILITATING A WRITING GROUP: A GATHERING FOR NEW AND EXPERIENCED FACILITATORS
at the Lake Superior Writers meeting room Marshall School Annex, 1301 Rice Lake Road, Duluth. Lake Superior Writers wants to support our genre-based writing groups and we are open to starting new ones so we are inviting you to a meeting of new and seasoned facilitators. LSW can suggest guidelines to aid you in structuring meetings and current facilitators will share their experiences. Experience in facilitating isn't necessary, just come with a willingness to learn. Some genre group possibilities are Poetry, Writing for Children, Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Memoir, Script Writing or Essay. Writing groups offer a time to share work with others, offer supportive feedback, and learn more about the writing process. Cheryl Reitan and others from the LSW Board will host the meeting. Refreshments will be served. Please call Cheryl at 218-728-3154 (eve) or 218-726-8996 (day) to RSVP Feel free to call her if you have questions or want further directions.

October 21, Thursday, 11:30 am, Chester Creek Cafe downstairs.
Do you remember hearing about the Algonquin Round Table, where friends met regularly to discuss literature and the literary scene? Well, LSW is establishing a Writers' Square Table. We'll meet the third Thursday of each month to discuss books, writing, and literary matters. We will not critique individual manuscripts.
Please place your order as you enter, and pick up water, silverware and a napkin. Your lunch order will be brought downstairs to you.
This is an open group open to all LSW members, friends, and the Duluth literary community. Pass the word. Please call Mara (728-1253) if you have questions. We look forward to seeing you on the 21st.

SARAH STONICH will lead a writers’ workshop called “Give My Monster Life! Developing Character and Place Through the Senses” for all writers at all levels.
Participants will focus on the art of creating fully realized characters by exploring their environments and characters’ reaction to their surroundings via their senses. Plan to attend the workshop with a character or characters in mind or bring a manuscript, either in progress or finished (essay, short story, or novel excerpt) of no more than 30 pages, on which to practice adding substance and texture to the prose by using techniques learned in this class.
Handouts and texts will include excerpts from “A Natural History of the Senses” by Diane Ackerman, “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger, and “Island of the Colour Blind” by Oliver Sachs. This event is sponsored by Lake Superior Writers, with the generous support of Falsani, Balmer, Peterson and Quinn, Attorneys at Law and Marshall School.

CORRECTION: In the Fall LSW Newsletter, The Notebook, we mistakenly stated that Northern Lights Bookstore offers special discounts to LSW members. Northern Lights, a local independent bookstore, offers frequent buyer discounts in the store and has provided LSW with generous gifts in support of local writers, for which we are most grateful. We regret any confusion caused by our error.
