Tues, Aug 3, 7:30 pm. ANN FLOREEN NIEDRINGHAUS reads at KITTY KAT KLUB, 315 14 Avenue SE, Minneapolis, as part of a monthly reading series sponsored by Penchant, a group of women writers from Northfield. Niedringhaus's first chapbook, “Life Suspended,” was published by Poetry Harbor. “Century's Road,” a new collection of poetry by Saint Paul, Minnesota author Patricia Kirkpatrick, has been chosen by the National Book Foundation for consideration in the 2004 National Book Award for Poetry. The poetry book was published in June 2004 by Duluth-based HOLY COW! PRESS, an independent literary press and publisher of Minnesota poets such as Connie Wanek, Roseann Lloyd, Joyce Sutphen, and Louis Jenkins. The National Book Foundation will announce a finalist short-list of five outstanding books submitted in each of four categories, including Poetry on October 13th, 2004. Century's Road, Ms. Kirkpatrick's first and only collection of published poetry, is a wide-ranging inquiry into many aspects of human life, probing old age and midlife as well as pre-birth. Pulitzer Prize winner Maxine Kumin writes, "Earthy, intensely womanly, these poems vividly portray birth, family issues...the language is powerful." Century's Road is available for $14.95 (add $2.00 for postage) from Holy Cow! Press, PO Box 3170, Mount Royal Station, Duluth, Minnesota 55803.
