Oct 12, 2 pm: Roger Mergendahl of Washburn, WI is the featured reader at the Second Sunday Poets reading at the Drummond Public Library in Drummond, Wisconsin.Theme: "Exploring Poetry" in celebration of Leif Ericson Day and Columbus Day. All area poets are invited to participate in the open reading preceding the featured reader. Free/refreshments served. Oct 23, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Regional authors Kurt Mead and Robert Shutes will share information and answer questions on their recently released nature guides. Mead's "Dragonflies of the Northwoods" is a comprehensive reference to all 102 species of area dragonflies complete with color photos. Shutes provides an intriguing look into the personalities of pine trees with "Society of Pines: An Introduction to the Pines around Us". Beecroft Books & Coffee, 3631 Tower Ave., 394-2665.

November 9, 1 pm: Lake Superior Writers is planning an event called "WRITERS SPEAK OUT ON BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOOD" to raise funds for the Clayton, Jackson, McGhie Memorial. We are planning an afternoon of readings interspersed with music and other entertainment on Sunday, November 9 at 1 p.m. In the YFC building at 201 E. First Street, and at the Clayton, Jackson, McGhie Memorial site across the street. Join Bart Sutter, Ellie Schoenfeld, Heidi Bakk-Hansen, area organizations and other writers. An open reading is included. Admission $10 per person; $20 per family.

DUST AND FIRE The Bemidji State University English Department is seeking visual art and writing by women to be included in the 18th annual "Dust and Fire"anthology. The submission deadline is October 24 for the publication that showcases female writers and artists.
