Nov 9, 10:30-12:30 p.m.: JAN BRETT is coming
to Duluth! With over 25 million books in print, #1 New York

of the nation's foremost author/illustrators of children's
books. The author will be at the Depot Great Hall celebrating
the release of "On Noah's Ark." Ticketed autographing;
free tickets will be available at 10 a.m. at the Main Entrance

Nov 9, tours of the site1 p.m., reading starts
at 2:15, Lake Superior Writers host "WRITERS SPEAK OUT
ON BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOOD," a fundraising event for
the Clayton, Jackson, McGhie Memorial. The event will take
place at the YFC (Old Shriners) Building, 201 East First Street,
Duluth and part of the event will be held across the street
at the Memorial site. The fundraisier is co-sponsored by NAACP,
Witness for Peace--Upper Midwest, YWCA, St. Scholastica Monastery,
New Moon Magazine, Arrowhead Interfaith Council, McCabe Center
and Service Printers. There will be readings by Ellie Schoenfeld,
Heidi Bakk-Hansen, Barton Sutter; dance by Project Lulu; music
by Althea McBurrows; and remarks by representatives from area
sponsoring organizations. An open reading follows the program.
The cost is $10 per individual and $20 per family. Funds raised
will support the memorial. Refreshments will be available.

Stories from ANTHONY BUKOSKI'S collection
"Time Between Trains" will be read on the Wisconsin
Public Radio program "Chapter A Day" the week of
December 15-19. In a recent review, The Dallas Morning News
said of "Time Between Trains," "This collection
stands as a lovely and bittersweet tribute to a small corner
of America."
The new Water~Stone Literary Magazine is now
available at Northern Lights Books and Gifts. Featured are
many Minnesota writers, such as JOYCE SUTPHEN, ROBERT BLY,
RAY GONZALEZ and the 2003 Jane Kenyon Poetry Prize-winner
CONNIE WANEK.
BRUCE HENRICKSEN'S story "Leaving Jenny"
will appear in the fall issue of Tulane Review. Part of the
story is set in a rest area on I 35 near Duluth.
CLEO HUTTON's book "Striking Back At
Stroke: A Doctor-Patient Journal," which she co-authored
with Louis R. Caplan, M.D., was published by The Dana Press
in May 2003 and has been receiving national attention. (Cleo
Hutton is a pseudonym for an active LSW member in northeastern
Minnesota.) The coauthors have been featured on over 40 radio
shows and television appearances throughout the nation including
CNN Health and About Health TV with Jeanne Blake AboutHealth.com.
An article in the November issue of Prevention Magazine features
an interview with Cleo Hutton. The spring 2003 edition of
Cerebrum Journal (The Dana Forum on Brain Science featured
a chapter excerpt from the book. The book is available at

NEW RIVERS PRESS invites emerging writers
of poetry, short fiction, novels, novellas, personal essays,
memoirs, and other forms of creative prose to submit to the
annual Minnesota Voices Project, MVP series, between October
1 and November 30 2003. The press will publish the winning
manuscripts. This competition is open to all writers:one title
will be selected from all submissions, while two titles will
be selected from writers who reside in Minnesota or New York
City. Prose submissions should be between 100 and 250 pages.

ARTIST FELLOWSHIPS FOR SCREENWRITERS 2004
McKnight Artist Fellowship for Screenwriters. IFP MSP and
the McKnight Foundation will award two $25,000 fellowships
to two Minnesota screenwriters in 2004. Jeanne O'Brien, IFP
MSP's Funding Programs Director and Administrator of the fellowship
program will conduct 3 workshops in Minnesota to explain the
guidelines and application process. In Duluth, Tuesday November
18, 7:00 p.m. Screenwriting Fellowship; 8:00 p.m. Filmmaking

ARTIST INITIATIVE GRANTS
Minnesota State Arts Board has a new, pilot program to support
and assist artists at various stages in their careers. It
encourages artistic development, nurtures artistic creativity,
and recognizes the contributions individual artists make to
the creative environment of the state of Minnesota. Grants
will be awarded for career building and for the creative development
of artists. Some artists may choose to request funds to create
new work, but that isnt a requirement of the program.
Grant range: $2,000 - $6,000 Application deadline: materials
