***LSW MEMBER KUDOS!
Duluth poet Connie Wanek has received wide recognition this
past spring in several anthology publications, a prestigious
award, and a praiseworthy book review in Poetry Magazine.
In April, Wanek's poem "After Us" was included in
the Random House anthology POETRY 180: A Turning Back to Poetry,
edited by United States poet laureate Billy Collins. Also,
in April, Nation Books selected Wanek's poem "You Say"
for the anti-war poetry anthology POETS AGAINST THE WAR, edited
by Sam Hamill. Wanek's poem was one of 11,000 anti-war poems
posted on www.poetsagainstthe war.com website. This past spring,
Wanek's long poem "A Random Gust of Wind" was awarded
the 2003 Jane Kenyon Poetry Prize from Hamline University's
literary journal WATER-STONE. The annual award includes a
$500 prize and publication in WATER-STONE. The June, 2003
issue of Poetry Magazine, one of the nation's most established
monthly poetry publications, published a praiseworthy review
of Wanek's second poetry book, HARTLEY FIELD. The review describes
Wanek's best work as "short, plain, funny, and frequently
dark" in a collection containing "very good poems..."
that reveal "deft, thoughtful writing." HARTLEY
FIELD, Connie Wanek's second collection of poetry, is available
from Duluth's Holy Cow! Press.
"STRIKING BACK AT STROKE: A Doctor-Patient Journal,"
by regional writer Cleo Hutton (a pseudonym) and Louis R.
Caplan, M.D., was recently published by The Dana Press and
distributed by The University of Chicago Press. The book combines
journal entries by Hutton, who experienced a stroke, with
clinical commentary by Dr. Caplan. Hutton and Dr. Caplan are
currently providing national radio interviews and presentations
around the country. Cleo Hutton is grateful for the assistance
she received from Mara Hart and Joseph Maiolo in the writing
of this book.
