Sept 5 WRITING WORKSHOP: Pen Award-winning author MaryBeth
Sanders Smith will host a writing workshop,"From Short
Story to Novel," at JW Beecroft Books & Coffee on
Thursday, Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. Her books include June
and Love Takes. This event is free and open to the
public. Space is limited so call 394-2665 to sign up.
Sept 28 READING/BOOKSIGNING: The Spirit Lake Poetry Series
will begin its sixth season by hosting a publication reading
and booksigning for Hartley Field, a new collection
of poetry by Duluth poet Connie Wanek, and published by Holy
Cow! Press. The reading will take place on Saturday evening,
Sept. 28, 7:30 pm, at Somers Lounge, College of St. Scholastica
in Duluth. The reading is free and open to the public and
refreshments will be available. The 88-page paperback book
retails for $13.95 and will be available at local bookstores
and by mail from Holy Cow! Press (Duluth). For information,

Sept 30 BOOK PUBLISHING. An Independent Publishing &
Strategic Marketing Conference will be held in Chicago from
Sept. 30 - Oct.1 with sessions on "Creative Marketing
for Entrepreneurial Authors & Publishers" and "Using
a publicity firm or publicist," among others. The cost

Oct 6 LSW is holding a special event: A Dance Interpretation,
Publication Event and Reading at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, in
the Spirit of the North Theatre, Fitgers on the Lake. The
event features writers from the LSW anthology Between Stone
and Flesh including Lisa McKhann, Mary Kay Rummel and
others.

***LSW MEMBER KUDOS!
BRUCE HENRICKSEN's short story, "The Celebrated Stripper
of Subfusc County," scheduled to appear in Borealis
in Sept.. Also, a short piece of humor called "On the
Distribution of Time" is due out in the Palo Alto
Review in Nov.
SHEILA PACKA is a Fiscal Year 2002 recipient of a Fellowship
grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, through an
appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature and The
McKnight Foundation.
CHERYL REITAN has received a residency at the Hambidge Center
in Rabun Gap, Georgia for part of Oct. 2002. She is working
on a novel.
MARYANN WEIDT, children's author, has published a new biography,
"Matthew Henson." It is part of a series aimed at
second graders called the History Makers Bios, published by
Lerner Publications and is available at Barnes & Noble
bookstores. Henson was the first African American to travel
to the North Pole. He and Robert Peary had spent many years
trying to get to the Pole and on April 6,1909, they finally
made it. Henson received barely any recognition for his feat
at the time. In fact, newspapers called him "Peary's
colored servant." Finally, when Henson was 87 years old,
President Eisenhower recognized his accomplishment and invited
him to the White House.

***LSW NEWS!
LSW ROOM OF OUR OWN --- On July 1, we moved into our new
office space on Rice Lake Road, next to Marshall School. Thanks
to our members for the generous donations of office paraphernalia.
There are still a few things on our wish list: curtains/curtain
rod, a floor or a table lamp, a coffee maker, mugs, a floor
mat, small bookcase for display, gift books, a small end table,
a colorful throw, colorful pillows, a radio, extension cords,
plants, lucite stands for book display, computer discs, and
book ends. We also need these books: a thesaurus, the MLA
Manual, Windows 95 Manual and other similar books. If you
can donate any of these items or if you have any questions
or comments, call our new number, 722-3094. Thank you!
THE LSW ANTHOLOGY, Between Stone and Flesh, contains
twenty LSW poetry and prose writers. To purchase this book,
which is available to LSW members for $8, or to find out more

***SMALL WRITING GROUPS
Writing is an extremely personal activity and often times
a small group works best for giving support and critique.
Several LSW groups meet regularly. When established groups
have openings, we will list the contact people in this space.
Call to arrange a meeting with the contact person to see if
your work and style will be a good fit.
A Creative Nonfiction group will have an organizational meeting
