UPCOMING EVENT:
Lake Superior Writers' Conference: A Gathering By and For Lake Superior Writers Members
Saturday, September 18, 2010, Yellowjacket Union, University of Wisconsin-Superior
workshops, "impromptu" writing sessions, group feedback sessions on work-in-progress, and a reading by participants
Open to students and the public. Co-sponsored by Lake Superior Writers and UW-Superior Writing Across the Curriculum
Join us for a full day of celebrating writing! The Writers’ Conference is set for Saturday, September 18, 2010, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Yellowjacket Union on the UW-Superior campus. Mark your calendars! Proposals are still invited.
The conference will consist of:
Workshops: Several writing workshops will be offered in the morning and afternoon, including “The Slush Pile (or How Not to Shoot Yourself in the Foot Before You Even Get it in the Door),” by Jeannie Eddy, editor and short story writer; and “Writing from Found Objects,” by Julie Gard, poet.
ImPROMPTu writing sessions: These are informal writing sessions in which participants write from prompts provided by session facilitators. The writing can start from any prompt and lead just about anywhere! Bring your notebook and pen, or laptop, and let your creativity flow! Impromptu writing sessions scheduled so far include a session focused on poetry/biblio therapy, facilitated by Paulette Warren, poet; and a session focused facilitated by prose writer Lisa Larson.
Works-in-progress peer feedback sessions: These are sessions in which you can bring your written works-in-progress in any genre and share responses and feedback with others in the same genre.
Reading: The day will culminate in a reading by conference participants. Readers can sign up for 5- or 10-minute time slots and share written works they’ve brought with them, or work they’ve created at the conference.
All workshops and sessions are led by LSW member volunteers.
The conference fee is $10 for LSW members, $15 for non-members, and FREE for students!
Call for Proposals: We still have openings for workshops and impromptu session facilitators. Please consider proposing a workshop of 1-, 1.5-, or 2-hour length, or volunteering to lead an impromptu writing session or works-in-progress peer review session. This is a “for us, by us” conference in which LSW members share their talents; the conference will be what we make it!
Please contact Writers’ Conference Co-coordinator Yvonne Rutford to volunteer to facilitate a session or propose a workshop, yrutford@uwsuper.edu, or 218-525-6540. Workshop proposals should include a brief description of the workshop, time length, a brief bio, and any equipment requirements. Impromptu sessions need no description; just volunteer, and bring your favorite writing prompts. Proposal deadline: July 25, 2010.
Additional information will be mailed to members soon.
